Or is everyone here undercover BATF and I'm in deep shit???

Here is another one to think about. There is a very good chance that this forum along with the other distilling related forums are monitored by the authorities both federal and state, maybe even local. This is why in almost every video you see where alcohol is actually being produced the producers show their AFP's or alcohol fuel permits. I think for the most part the average home hobby or craft distiller has very little to worry about as long as you follow the basic rule--DON'T TELL and DON'T SELL. It is not illegal to sell, buy, or own a still. It is only illegal to use it to distill alcohol for consumption or sale. Now if you are making a few gallons a year for yourself and maybe as an occasional gift or to share a few drinks with friends and family there is a good chance that you have nothing to worry about. If you are making hundreds of gallons and telling everyone about it (even on the forums) you may find yourself on the receiving end of a visit from some very serious heavily armed individuals who are going to ruin your day. So have fun, be careful, and don't be stupid and you'll be fine
For the stinky carboy in the closet issue try this. Take a 2 foot length of 2 or 3 inch pvc pipe. slide it over the top of the carboy. Fill some nylon stockings with some carbon mesh filter materiel (do a search for septic tank supplies-filtering). place it in the pipe and no more smell. This is what I do for my septic tank vent and if it works for a 1500 gallon septic tank there is a good chance it will work for a 5 gallon carboy. Hope this helps you out.

Hey shovelhead,
In my state they found the perfect way to get around the fed-state issue. It is not legal but it is decriminalized. Anything an ounce or less is a 100 fine, you don't have to show an ID, and if they ask for your name you can lie.

I have a personal friend who once had a still, and not a very small one either. He was making a run one day when 2 Deputies stopped to talk to him, well thinking he was caught he simply told them what he was doing and ask them if they would like to see his still.
They only asked if he sold his product, to which he said no but if they wanted a sample they could have some, they drove away and nothing was ever said about it.
Now if it had been the Sheriff he would have been in serious trouble with that political agenda to worry about.
