Hi all,

Just wanted to say hi and ask a quick question.

I have been lurking for a little while, and the more I do, the more I am interested in building my own still. I have brewed beer and wine in the past, but have moved away from it a bit. While I am scrounging for still parts, I will be making a new batch of wine.

Anyway, I am planning to build a valved reflux still. I found plans on homedistiller.org. The pdf is called Home_Still_Plans.

I have been looking for a cheap source of either stainless or copper pipe, and I found 4 feet of 3" stainless steel pipe for $47, or 4 feet of 2.5" ss pipe for $36. (not sure how much shipping is)

http://www.acceltube.com/

The question I have is that it is a SS pipe for auto exhaust systems (grade 304). Is this still ok to use. or does it have to be a different grade.

I am still looking locally for reasonable copper too, but this seems to be the best I have found yet.

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Been doing a bit of research. Turns out that Grade 304 SS is used in breweries, dairys, as well as in SS cookware. Looks like that would be acceptable. I have found a new source locally that charges $3/lb for SS. An 18ga (.065in) 6' pipe with a 3" diameter would be approximately $36. Now my only issue is do I want to deal with trying to weld/solder it.
