"Hello all. I just joined this forum, but have been reading a lot of great information from it lately. Much appreciated.
My question is a simple one, how tall do you make your distiller's parrot? I have found the design on here that I'm going to copy, but I'm just not sure how tall to make the well which holds the alc meter? I'm using 1"" copper, and plan to put the intake bowl about 2 inches higher than the exit bowl. That looks to be about right, based on the pictures I have seen.

"Your right that is a stupid question....naw I'm just kidding ya.
Its gonna have to be tall enough to hold a 12 inch hydrometer so you can measure 190 proof. It will sink all the way to the bottom so measure your meter and go from there. Simple enough."

"OMG that is a stupid question............yuk yuk  Not really Brewpal. Just a little onion squarshin  Make it deep enough to allow for the length of your measuring tool. Narrow enough to minimize too much liquid for the best real time measurements. And vented to mitigate any hydrolic affect"

"Thank you guys! I anticipated a bit of ribbing about the question, so thank you for not letting me down in that respect too The reading point is 9 1/2"", so I'm going to make it 11"" tall. That will also leave plenty of room for a piece of copper scubber to be placed at the bottom, to work as a shock absorber (suggestion I read on one of the posts here.) I'm using 1"" pipe, which does leave a lot of volume, but I also read that is the recommended diameter. The parrot will have a collection cup, and not be attached directly to my condenser. Follow up question... is it recommended to put a drain valve at the bottom of the pipe? I've read about it being done, but only saw one picture where someone actually did it. Didn't know if it's something I should really think about or not? Thanks again! Cheers, Tom"
