"I'm living in Turkey and %95 of Turks are Muslim. Islam prohibited the alcohol so alcohol consumption rate is very low. Alcohol is being sold in some shops but there is no alcohol culture in Turks.
And the problem is, I can't find any material of distilling. I made my own still at home but I can't find other materials, like carbon, yeast, yeast nutrient etc.
I tried to made a mash with baker's yeast(saccharomyces cerevisiae), sugar and water. But it stopped producing alcohol after a few days. It produced alcohol but not enough.
And here is my questions:
What can I add to mash instead of yeast nutrient?
And what should I add for a perfect mash (please tell me about generally used materials at home, instead of chemical subtances that bought from chemists; because buying chemicals are pain in the ass in Turkey)?
Is S. Cerevisiae good for producing alcohol?
Is carbon filtering really neccesary for make good neutral spirit?"

"I can't help with your questions as I am new to this. However I did spend 15 months on a mountain top outside Trabzon, Turkey (1963-1965 Air Force) so I can appreciate your problem. I doubt that much has changed. LOL.

I'm from Black Sea but not Trabzon. Also, I'm living in Istanbul now. And your military mission is 30 years older than my birth date

If you can buy the fertilizer then you still would have to figure out how much to use. If you used the same amount as what you would for Yeast Nutrient it would be a guess. If you started out at a lower amount you could always add more as the ferment progresses or slows down. A simple wash you would need , sugar, yeast(S. Cerevisiae) has been used for brewing but I don't know what kind of alcohol content you would get. Molasses/barley syrup or powder if you are making rum or whiskey. If you are going strictly for a neutral you probably wouldn't use those although they do make a consistent ferment for me. You can get a neutral from them by running it through a reflux still and carbon filtering. I also use a small amount of epsom salt to the wash and some lemon juice and the yeast nutrient."

"div4gold...I got here before you but correct me if I'm wrong. The lemon is a faux enzyme and the epsom salt is to reduce the formation of fusals in your mash.
Lots of folks will add lemon juice and beanno (these are fake enzymes ) you can buy the real thing but these really do work.
And again the epsom salt reduces the amount fo fusal oil production."

I forgot to ask, what kind of fertilizer I have to use? I learned that epsom salt is magnesium sulphate. Is it presenting in a kind of fertilizer?

I use the lemon juice to lower the ph down to around 5 or so. The epsom salt, magnesium is just an additive to make sure the wash isn't deficient so the yeast works better. Epsom salt is really cheap, most grocery stores and pharmacies have it, I only use about 1/2 tsp per 5 gallon wash. Being on the acidic side of 7 is better for the yeast , that's why I use the lemon juice.

I think I've heard that the beano helps the bubbling up during cooking and I guess that would reduce some of the fusals in the column. I've never used that either so I can't really comment on it. I do know that a molassas/rum wash tends to bubble up more than the barley wash."

The fertilizer would be ammonium phosphate, that's the stuff they also make explosives out of. The regular yeast nutrient calls for 1 tsp per gallon of wash.

What kind of fertilizer I have to use instead of yeast nutrient? There are many many different fertilizers which one I have to use?

You know , when I got to thinking about it I think it's ammonium nitrate that is used in explosives so the ammonium phosphate shouldn't be a problem.

Really :), all of my problems with buying chemicals is because of ammonium nitrate and nitric acid. When I tried to buy ammonium nitrate from a shop, the vendor kicked me out and said "don't even think to make a bomb, go away" And then I always feel bad things while I buy chemicals  And there are lots of stupid terrorist organisations in Turkey, their members are sometimes bombing somewhere with amateur homemade bombs. Because of that, vendors not easily selling explosive things without a lisence or something like that. OK then, I think I can buy it without a problem. I didn't think to buy yeast nutrient online because I haven't got a credit card but I just found an online material store that sells things with money transfer from bank. Maybe I will buy yeast nutrient with that way. All right, my problem is solved completely, thanks for your helps again :)
