"Hey everybody, I came on this forum by looking informations for macerating my wormwood to make a good absinthe, where I live there are only absinthe that came from the Czech Republic, and it's very disgusting... so i want to make my own but i am totally new with the maceration process.

I already have 1 Kg of wormwood, so my question is, if i buy 4.56L (4 x 1.14L bottle) of 94% Global alcohol and i put it on a plastic tub for 1 years or 2, will it be ok? Confused (i don't care for the bitter taste, i like this.)

I will use this alcohol >>

"I've made absinthe a few times and what you are using will work fine but you should use a big enough glass jug for the maceration since the high proof alcohol could leach toxins from the plastic container.
You dont have to macerate it for that long, 2 weeks will be enough time to get all the oils out of your wormwood.
Also there is more than just wormwood in absinthe, star anise, anise seed, fennel seed and if you want, common sage which actually has a higher percentage of thujone than wormwood and is not as bitter.
Keep in mind that to do a proper absinthe, after maceration you will need to pot distill your product and then re-macerate with green herbs for another 2 weeks for color by using herbs such as Hyssop, Melissa and pepperment leaf. If you want a la bleue type absinthe you don't re-macerate and have it in its clear form.
Just macerating it then filtering if without distilling it will give you a very bad tasting absinthe.
I really enjoy making absinthe and my friends really enjoy drinking it.BigGrin
Hope this helps,
Cheers

Thank you so much tikisteve !

I will use the glass thing instead of plastic for my brew, i didn't like the taste of the anise it's so disgusting.. i prefer the taste of low quality alcohol from Czech Republic RollEyes

mmm.. sage contain thujone I didn't know that i will mix sage/wormwood then !! but two weeks seem not much for me.. maybe 2 month is better Confused

And i don't own any tools for the distillation process so i'll drink "raw" absinthe BigGrinBlushing

"Hi Bob,
No harm in macerating longer, that is why this is more of an art and craft.
I found a lot of info on sage at this web site, www.mountainroseherbs.com.
There is all kinds of info of almost every herb available. The link for info on common sage is, http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/learn/culinary_sage.php
Really cool info and folklore info too.
Good luck on your maceration.

"I'm sending you a link to post I did in 2010. (On another forum site). Scroll about 2/3 down on the page...mine is the one called 'Making Absinthe' (my own experience) - Mark So.Calif.
