Made a rum wash a few days ago with the following recipe:
Enough water and molasses to make about 5.5 gals
S.G. 1.090
Lemon Juice
Yeast nutrient
2.5 lbs of sugar
Distillers yeast...
Aeration and then yeast pitched at about 80 degrees.
Sat and did nothing for a few days so I though maybe my yeast was bad....went and ""Rum Turbo Yeast"" pitched that stuff and still nothing. Been sitting there at a constant 75 degrees. Is there something wrong with the molasses I am using? I attached a picture of the lid of the molasses bucket. Help!

Often times preservatives are used to mitigate mold growth. As a result,,,the yeast activity suffers.

Thanx LWTCS!

Kinda thought that when I bought it ......knew it was too good to be true. For $20 it was worth a try. Guess I'll just have to use it for it's intended use.

"You could try diluting the wash down which dilutes the preservative (also the sugars) and pitching again. Depends on the concentration of preservative and when you dilute you reach the critical point where the preservative is no longer effective and MAYBE the yeast is able to work. If this does not work then I would keep it and make another couple of batches of wash with good molasses and add a small quantity of this wash to it. So the concentration of preservative is a lot lower and wont effect the yeast.

Thanx! I will try that. A friend told me to try boiling the wash for a little bit and that should denature the preservatives. I will try both!

Try warming it up. Distillers likes 90*+

When starting off & adding water to the fermenter I target a 95* pitching temp

I've use cattle feed molasses for a long time and have never had a issue. I only use 2lbs of molasses and 8 lbs of sugar though.
