i did it since it was recomended. Not much trouble to make it always on, works good for reflux but i'm think of trying it with a light dimmer in pot mode since my cuts are leaving alot to tails when it runs all out. All you have to do to make it run all out is open it up and pull the wire off the dial and hook it directly to the element.

Light dimmer blows, really throws a lot of heat even wide open. Get the variable router controller off of fleabay. I has Off, all On, & variable in one unit.

"Using a regular light dimmer on 1500 watts is not a good choice.

""It is important that any heater control you use doesn't contribute to this, because one boiler on its own
can have as large an effect as 100 other devices. Power companies are now actively searching for large
sources of interference − and a poorly controlled boiler would be a large source. DO NOT attempt to
control a large power heater element with an ordinary light dimmer, no matter what its rating.
Dimmers rely on phase switching and not only introduce direct currents into the neutral line, they also
introduce multiple harmonics of the basic power supply frequency. Both these effects can damage the
power supply system. Even switching a heavy load on and off rapidly without sophisticated phase
control can cause damage. For this reason, don"t use the old method of using a diode to halve the
power delivered to the boiler. It will interfere with the power supply and the power company will
come looking for you.""

1500/120=12.5 amps . Even most ceiling fan speed controls only go up to about 6 amps. It's going to take a heavy duty controller something in the router speed control area. I mostly pot still so running the 1500 watt plate wide open works good for me. In reflux the water in the tower controls the temp.

Back to your original ?. If you don't modify it to run wide open it will cycle on and off and take forever to heat up. It will increase your 5 gallon run time by 3 hours or so.
