is well water too hard to use for making a wash? would it be worse since im using a garden hose to fill my fermentor with hot water (have hot water spigot on outide of house i installed) maybe get a Britta type filter that can attach to the end of hose but should i use something to soften the heavily metallic hard well water?

I use a filter just in case. I definitely would not recommend adding chemicals to soften the water.

Something I recently discovered, I always use RO water for beer and likker washes. Well now they have a package of salts and minerals to add back that are removed by the RO system. So I ask myself why remove it by RO just to buy a package and add it back. Now I also use hose water but I give it a good heatup or a little boil just to sanitize somewhat. That will drive off lots of things from the water. So try your hard water - I bet you wont be able to tell the difference.

Some wash recipes actually add Gypsum to the water cause yeast likes hard water. I think your fine.

Remember........your gonna DISTILL it anyway. You wont get loads of actual flavor anyway, and I bet the off flavors from hard water would be minimal.

I use well water that is hard, but it's gone through my softener 1st. I've had no issues with my product (or the wine I make either) I used to use bottled water for both, when I made the switch we really couldn't tell any difference.
