I have been distilling for about 8 months on a small 2 gallon still now. I only use distilled water for my mash. I am upgrading to a larger still and I am wondering if I need to continue using distilled water or can I use tap water?

Dont know your water but.....just try it and see what you get. It cant be poison and might be the best yet.

"I'm in So Cal and always used tap water. No problems with it, I add some gypsum on my whiskey mashes and always add keep my ph level at about 6.
I use the distilled water to drop my ABV before bottling."

"For irish whiskey you might try using distilled water treated with dublin water salts.
For kentucky and tennesee you might try distilled with burton salts.


Most brewing books talk about the water profile most favorable for diferent styles.


I seem to remember that most of the bunch says if the waster tastes good or drinking, its ok to mash with."

I've been curious about this as well. Is the best way to determine if it's good or not to give it a try and see what happens? I'm in a similar situation, had a small personal made pot still so buying and using distilled water was not a big deal, but just ordered a big boy from brewhaus with the 8 gallon premium kettle so I'm sure i'll be making way more mash and it would be very nice to use tap water. We drink right out of our tap and it tastes fine, is that a good indicator it will be okay? Also, as long as my mash still ferments like it should, is that another sign it's okay?

I've used tap water since day one and have never had a problem of any kind.

just got 3 5 gallon batches going using my tap water and they are going like crazy with turbo yeast so I'm assuming all is well.

Sweet i was all worried about the distilled water as well since im about to do my 1st run! just gonna use tap water woot!!
