"Purchased a 1500 watt hot plate. Did the bypass thing. Want to give it try on a 5 gallon or 15 gallon batch if someone can give me an idea on the heat up time. 15 Gallon may be an enternity, not sure.
As always, thank you."

"I have that 1500 thing by-passed-- you will hate using it on the 15 gallon boiler. Its perfect for 5 gallons. I have converted my 8 gallon boiler to a 240 volt/5500 watt internal heat element. Its a lot more tolerable now."

Can't tell you on a 15 gallon run but bypassed on a 5 gallon run is about 1hr 30 minutes to start dripping.

For some strange reason from what I had been reading in historical posts that did not quote specific times but references to, 'taking forever' I was fearing it taking 3-4 hours. div4gold, thank you."

I recommend that you do a few test or "shakedown" runs with just water. You might be surprised by what you learn and you can become familiar with your new rig _before_ you "go live." If you keep good notes on your observations you'll be able to plan your runs better.
That said, it takes me about 2:40 from power on to first drips for 20l charge in a fully packed PSII HC (reflux configuration, copper mesh) with the modified 1500w plate. I'm not sure if this is useful to you ... I've never run the pot still configuration with this rig.
Regards, --JB

Just remember that using water, you will not get any output till 210 deg. F. where with alcohol you will start to produce foreshots as you get around 160 deg. F.
