The aluminum will pit very quickly. The service life of an aluminum boiler can be limited to just a hand full of runs as the boiler contents can be corrosive. Best to start with SS orou'll just be spending directly to the trash Heep.

"I agree. I use aluminum for mashing only, then transfer to fermenter. I never allow alcohol to touch anything but stainless steel during distillation.
alcohol + aluminum = bad"

"Would a aluminum pot be ok for heating a mash to break up starch. Ive always read no aluminum because it flakes. Ive spent way over my budget and cant afford another stainless pot especially one that holds 8-10 gallons. I have crawfish pot that is perfect but....
To be able to use that as my mash tun(wouldnt use it to ferment)would be perfect. Any info appreciated."

I agree with Bayou-Ruler. I use a huge aluminum (fish boil) pot to do my mashes on an open burner outside. Once cooled and converted I dump it into the fermenter. But I never let it sit in aluminum for very long. It works fine for me this way.

"Thanks, i have another question. I used flaked corn on my try with a grain(and 6 row barley) and fermented on the grain. Afterwords, straining was a big problem. The flake corn was like a gel sponge that almost refused to give up any liquid. Is it easier to seperate before fermenting and after or is this just something that has to be dealt with?
I will have to say that got about 2 1/4 quarts at about an average 130 proof. sweet and flavorful. I had no confidence when I began my run and figured I Blew fermenting on grain.
FYI, I have a 40 inch reflux column and a 13 gallon milk can(hillbilly stills, great quality and nice features) Put four rolls of copper packing on first run and got about 180 proof with a sugar wash. 2nd run was flaked corn and I put only 2 rolls in and started run at about 150 proof. Stopped when smell changed. Proof was down to 110 or so. Noticed a little bit of cloudiness. thanks again."

Try putting a piece of screen around the bottom of a racking Cain and rack off the beer. And yes im talkin about the type of screen like a window screen. |
