Ran a wash this weekend really slow 69-70c came out around 92%. Want to carbon filter the batch any suggestions on the easiest way. I have a carbon snake but it say's not to use with anything over 50% and I don't want to dilute the mix quite yet. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I dont recall ever reading that carbon filtering is done without diluting the product first.:)

"Dude, your not gonna want to drink it at that proof anyway so cut it down to to 120 or so and then run it through your filter. Something about the molecular structure of the carbon and the high proof hooch -- I cant remember. If you must use the carbon at that proof, make some little bags of carbon in nylon stockings and drop those in the jugs. The high proof hooch with carbon in it is not gonna ruin you likker its just not gonna utilize the carbon properly. Amd make sure you clean your carbon with hot-hot water before use."

What I remember about the reason to cut the C2H5OH is that : C2H5OH is already a solvent, If you run it through the carbon much above 45%-90 proof it works just the opposite of what you want it to. It will leach out instead of absorbing the things you want to get rid of. If you want a higher content than say 90 proof you could cut your product, filter it, and then redistill it to get it back to a higher C2H5OH level. Once you have filtered it you wouldn't need to do that again after you redistilled it.

Was going to leave it high proof to mix into apple pie. Very new to this distilling thing, how important is running it through charcoal? It was a simple sugar wash using turbo yeast.

If you want a neutral without any flavor of your mash then run it through the carbon, if a little off flavor doesn't matter then use it without filtering. Good vodka is filtered 2 or 3 times to get a true neutral."

Ok so it sounds like its pretty hard to get a neutral at that proof. What is the best method using carbon

I use the Brewhaus stainless steel carbon filter, works good as long as you aren't trying to do it in cold weather. Room temps are fine."

thanks for the info. so its not the carbon that is the main issue it's what you are running the alcohol through.

I'm not sure what you are asking here. The way the carbon reacts to high proof alcohol is what I thought we were talking about. The only thing I've run through a carbon filter has been alcohol.
