"It's been awhile since I last logged on here, life and what not? I set up a new
batch of ""wash"" or vodka tonight doing everything just like I did in the past and after 3-4 hours I have nothing happening in my fermenter. My wife says that the Turbo yeast I used went bad, I bought it about a year and a half ago, it's been kept in the pantry and the packet hasn't been violated and I thought yeast would stay useable for years. Am I stupid? Is my wife correct? I whipped up this batch exactly like all the ones before but I have nothing. Any ideas would be great, and thanks for your time. BREEZY46"

The shelf life depends on how its stored. It will last longer when stored cold. That sounds like a typical turbo recipe, so I would say that the yeast is dead.

My suggestion to you is to get away from the turbo yeast and high sugar content washes. If you are after a nice clean neutral, then turbo is not the way. All I do is 25L 10% ABV sugar washes with bakers yeast.

Here is a recipe that will produce good clean neutral every time:

This recipe is for a 6.5 gallon wash (25 Liters) & Will yeild 10% ABV wash (2.5 quarts) of ethanol.

Ingredients:
10 lbs Sugar (dissolved in hot water)
6oz tomato paste (Yeast Nutrient)
1 Tbsp DAP (Optional but Recommended)
1/3 cup bakers yeast

Instructions:
(1)Disolve 6 ounces of tomato paste in 5 liters of hot water.

(2)Disolve 10 pounds of sugar in 10 liters of hot water stiring until all of the sugar is dissolved and not gritty.

(3)Pour the dissloved sugar into the fermenter with the tomato paste.

(4)Top off the fermenter to 25 liters with cold water and stir well.

(5)Once the wash has cooled to 80 degrees Fahrenheit or less add 1/3 cup of bakers yeast and stir well.

(6)Place lid on fermenter add airlock and allow to ferment for 7 days or so.


Oh and your wash is not a loss..... dilute it down to a SG of 1.080 and pitch some bakers yeast.

The way I have made my wash in the past is just tap water as hot as I can get it
then I add 15# sugar and stir it till it is clear then let it cool down to 104- or 40 c
add the yeast and watch it go. No boiling water, and it has worked fine but I guess yeast does have a shelf life. I tried BR's suggestion with the tomato paste and it did great, I don't know what DAP is he mentioned maybe someone out there could enlighten me? But by my alcholmeter I'm getting a 85-88 reading and that works for me. Hope this helps. Regards, BREEZY 46"

DAP = diammonium phosphate it is a yeast nutrient. 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of wash is the recommended dose. If you cant find DAP, use 21-0-0 fertilizer.

I don't boil my water & sugar. I just heat it enough for the sugar to completely dissolve in the water (No Grit). I normally dissolve 10Lbs of sugar in about 2 gallons of water and then add that to the fermenter and then top her off with cool tap water."

"Converting sugar useing boiling water just means making sure its completely melted!
If you boil your water that does deplete the o2 from your water so whisking it will add some back. Its not a must but cant hurt and in fact does help.

Now by just useing hot hot water theres prolly still enough o2 there to help the yeast kick in gear but from that first recipe that was posted about sugar and water and a turbo yeast, that usually works but the age of that pack may be the deciding factor that made that NOT work.

If you research more on washes and mashes and the nutrients they NEED to THRIVE you'll learn why the paste and nutrients work so well.Yeast is a living organism that has to be fed."
