I use about 2 rough tablespoons per gallon. I shake it every day till i get a color change Then leave it for about another week or two. I really dont take it seriously i just look for a color change basicly.

I cut up some oak left over from my cabinet job. The pieces I use are basically 6 inches long and about 3/4" square. I char them with a propane torch and put 5-6 in a wide mouth gallon jar and then top it off with whiskey. When they are used for the first time you have a good color change within a week. Just reusing them the 2nd time takes longer and the 3rd time take quite a while to get much color. If then you let them dry and put the torch to them again you'll get back to a quick color change. I've got some pieces that have been used a lot and as I discard some of the older burnt up pieces I just add a few more new pieces.

If you drop back to the forum headings ---- go to Whiskey them scroll to the Sweet Feed Whiskey heading and go to page 2 you'll see what 2 sticks per jar looks like. Theres a basic timeline on the jars so if darker was your goal you could add more sticks or dont leave them in as long, the color and taste adjustment is up to you.

I make my own from white or red oak (see homemade oak chips in general questions) and use 4- one OZ shot glasses full of cuttings/chips per quart for at least two weeks rotating often. Results are smooth as silk.
