Here is my new Air Operated Activated Carbon Filter System that I have been working on, the MC1. Constructed out of 304 Stainless Steel, powder coated for apperance only, and operates on 4lbs. of air pressure. 4lbs is just enough to give it a gentle push without blowing it through, the more contact with the carbon the better. It holds 2- 1.7 liter bags of Carbon, and take about 2 hours to filter 2 gallons of Alcohol through. Takes the watching paint dry effect out of filtering you might say. For cleaning up a sugar wash to flavor with an essence, it works great! Whats nice about it is you don't have to use water to push the Alcohol with, the air does it for you. The problem I was having with water was, I would put in 90 Proof and getting 80 to 85 proof back. And there are those out there that will say, if you do everything right you don't need to filter, True. But for those who don't do everthing right always, there is filtering. You thoughts are appreciated, and please, for those who do not filter, I don't need a distilling lesson on how to do it right the first time. That's quite a setup. Do you pack the column tight when you use it? Do you have any problem with the filter paper using the 4 lbs of pressure?

Usually I will cleanup the Carbon to try and get all the dust and fine particles out of it I can first, then I just pour it in wet. Then I will let the air flow through it for a little while to kinda settle it out. On the bottom of the tube I have a short peice of 3/8 stainless tubing about 1 1/2 long, I cut small peice from a nylon paint stainer I get at Lowes and put it on with a hose clamp. That keeps the Carbon in real well, I use the filter paper on top of what ever I am catching in. That generally gets any dust that hasn't washed out.

If I do get any dust in the Alcohol through all of that, I just run it through again. I get a kick out of watching it work.

Do just use a pressure regulator and leave it hooked up to your air source when you are running?

I leave the air hooked up the whole time, i'll back the pressure down to fill her up and then turn it back up to 4lbs. on the regular.

That's Funny! It's not nasty, if your going to use one of the Essences to flavor your alcohol it's a good idea to filter it to make sure there is no off flavor in it. And I know there are those who will say if you do everything right with your sugar wash there will be no need to filter it. But sometimes the littlest thing can throw off the taste with some of the essence flavorings.

Bigwheel, You forgot to mention "Roberts" That's got to be the cheapest,nastious wine ever sold, I put it right next to sterno, but it works. I kinda feel like you, If you want to put artificial flavors in your shine, you might as well go to the liqour store, probably cheaper. On the other hand, I have added a handful of green mint leaves or maybe a stick or two of natural cinnamon and cherry wood for the females that are a little choosy! I generally try to keep them away from it. You know one thing leeds to another.
