Exactly ditto Wineo above post. If going for a stripped neutral run, I add the bakeing soda immediately after the stripping run, and just let sit till the spirit run. I then add about a quarter cup of canning salt, no iodine, or dryers. Defines the cuts dramatically, and reduces the tails.

Wineo & John,
Thanks! I have my baking soda and canning salt ,no iodine, ready and waiting! Thursday will be day 8 on my wash ,2
25L, I plan to add Sparkolloid in the afternoon and then rack both washes on Friday afternoon. ,Flying out of town Friday night...be back Saturday night, Sunday morning I will rack everything again and then get ready for my stripping run...hopefully I will be starting clean!

Wineo, your statement about running it hard...Am I right in understanding that that would be minimal water on the tower so that it's not trying to fully reflux? ...I would assume the head temps would rise fairly quickly? I will use some copper packing in the tower...but not full.

I'll be glad when I get this first run behind me! I'm sure I'll be less stressed on the second go around! Thanks again for all the help...and for holding my hand as I venture forth! ...Kathy has volunterred to be in charge of sniff and taste! ...what a job UserPostedImage

Travis, yes, little or no reflux,so you will get more output.Since its your 1st run,Dont run it too hard, just get to know your equpment, and every thing will turn out fine.Dont worry about the temps.too much on this 1st run.Once you start collecting just turn the heat back quite a bit,and watch your output. If it slows down add more heat,if it surges or starts putting out vapor, turn the heat down till it goes away. You will figure it out.

travis,
so you'll be glad when this first run is behind you? well buddy, let me tell you, you've gotten very good, and very sound advice. so i'm sure it'll go good. but if by some chance it doesn't, who cares. learn from your mistakes. and with this hobby it always seems like there is something new to learn. but if'n you don't like the final outcome. then reflux it again, filter and i'm sure it'll be a great nuetral spirit to sip on. good luck. i think you'll do just fine.

Thanks Buzzman...

I racked both washes this morning. One thing off the bat...after removing the tops I checked the wash temp using glass thermometer. It read 20° C. The stick-on thermometer was reading 24. So actually my wash fermented for 7 days at approximately 20-21 C. A little cool...but OK. My specific gravity was 986 & 982, calculated ABV was 16 & 16.25, ABV by instrument was 18 & 19. Which should I believe...calculated by SG or by ABV instrument? ...or in the end does it really matter...I"d just like to know which is more accurate? Maybe just split the difference? Does this sound a little low for the Turbo 48?

Both washes were cream color ,for some reason I thought they would be somewhat clear or fairly translucent,. Is this cream color OK? I took a little slurp off a spoon and it was obvious something had been working! Anyway...racked into glass carboys. A fair amount of sediment on the bottom of the vessel. Cleaned the fermentation vessels out and transferred the wash back into them. Added Sparkolloid per directions and sealed with airlocks. I"ll rack them tomorrow ,24 hours for the Sparkolloid to work,...and also rack when transferring to the STOMP ,My wife has named our new PS II HC distiller, Stomp! Shinny Tower of Magical Persuasion,.
