"I want to try the following recipe and was wondering whaich crushed malted barley would be a good choice. The home brew shops have a lot of choices and not sure on which one to try. Here is the recipe

Use a 2-/6row pale malt.

Yup thats the stuff. you can add in other malts for flavor but you are best sticking with 6 or 2 row as your main malting grain imo.

I just read your recipe. Its ok but choose a different yeast. Turbo yeast gives a bummy taste you will want to avoid. Besides the potential abv of the all grain mash there is only about 8%. No need for turbos.
If instead of 8.5lbs of flaked maize you went 7lbs and added 1.5lbs of rye you would have a standard bourbon grain bill used by the majority of big name distillers. IMO the rye gives it a more well rounded flavor. I wonder when i do all corn sometimes if im drinking whiskey or corn syrup.

I used liqor quik for all my first runs. Gives a bummy taste. Its turbo yeast, i would avoid it. For me its a step backwards. The weird thing i found with it, and was confirmed by another member here, is that the bummy taste keeps coming back. Water it down and run it again, tastes ok, week later bummy taste is back. Never figured it out and started playing with EC-1118 and bakers yeast instead. No access to distillers unless i want to import it. :0

The 18% is no joke though. I am sure i hit 20 on one. Yeilds were very high. But again, bummy tasting.

Sittin around the still aint exactly man hours. Lets be honest. If you can hook me up with a job like that im in.
But i get ya. Its a hobby. I ferment 20 gal to get a few quarts of hearts which i drink just about as fast as i make it. And thats sugar enhanced mashes. When i think about how big an operation it would take to make a decent amount of all grain, well the man hours get pretty staggering and so does the boiler and mash ton.
I have got 7.5quarts of keeper off a 10gal turbo wash. That was my honey/brown sugar mix. It was bummy. Run it a second time through at 87% and it was better. But a week later the bummy returned. Gosh darn bummy.
