Using a pot or reflux still requires discarding a small initial distilled product to 'eliminate' chance of methanol, is this an issue using the Amazing still? If not, why not? Thanks curious

Generally, the Amazing Still was intended to be used with a very clean sugar-water fermentation, which results in no ,or virtually no, methanol. If the system is being used for other purposes, then you can discard the first half cup or so from each 1/3 run. This is most easily done by attaching a hose to the bottom of the outer bucket to act as a drain.

Appreciate the info. Makes sense on the clean ferment. I'd be interested to know how many do discard the initial 1/2 cup of product when using the pure sugar ferment, or if over the long term they have found it unnecessary. I personally would only use the above method, staying away from any other type of fermented liquid. Want to be certain that the resulting product will be safe for its intended user...me UserPostedImage Thanks again

I have been using the 'Amazing Still' for a fairly short time, but I have distilled several 5-gallon batches of sugar, water and 'Prestige Vodka' yeast into some very good vodka! I quit discarding early on and haven't noticed any difference. As Rick said, IF any methanol is made, it is in such small quantities as to be harmless. You would have to drink 10 or 20 gallons at one time to ingest enough meth to be concerned! However, IF you did that you wouldn't be here to read this 'cause you would have already embalmed yourself!
So stick to the sugar, water and good yeast and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
