"I want to use one in part of my still operation. I want to use it as a means of deactivating a contacter that will switch my applied voltage to the heat element from 240 to 120 volts. I can already do it with a device i have by simply throwing a toggle switch but I really would like it to happen when temperature rise at the base of the tower first is sensed.  "

If it is successful then perhaps i can use PIDs to controll relays for the separation of the foreshots and the other components of the alcohol
product:)"

ggi.ac.in i am very fond of analog meters-- the pids are digital-- i only monitor voltage and current with the analog meters. I also prefer an analog VOM over the digital."

"I use the relay output of the pid to make and break the voltage applied to the mechanical relay coil. When the mechanical relay is normally closed 120 volts is applied to the heat element. When energized, the normally open contacts are closed and apply 240 volts to the heat element.
I have a sensor installed at the base of the still so that as soon as the temperature starts rising there, it de activates the relay that supplys 220V power to the mechanical relay coil. Now de energized, we are supplying 120 volts to the heat element. I have a variac/router speed control in the 120 volt feed so i can tweak the rate of output from the still.
The first step is to get a mechanical DPDT relay. I like 40 amps and make 2 input power cords. One 120 volts and the second 240 volts. Use a toggle switch to activate the coil.
It will be easy to replace the toggle switch with a pid from that point.
I'm hunting for a schematic that i made months back."

What PID are you using?
And finally, if I understand correctly, you are plugged into both a 120 and a 240 source, or two different 120 sources that you combine for 240? Or are you somehow dividing the 240 voltage and throwing away some amps when the contactor de-energizes?"

Hey Scotty,
Digging up old post here, I think your name has popped up in every post that i have read. :)
I had new Watlow heat controllers installed in the ovens at work and since we are closing the ovens may end up in the scape pile. May end up with about 6
I don't need them at the moment, but do you think they would be a usable item in the future ?
