I had questions about heat times and current readings etc. before I made this setup so I figured I would post results for others who may have the same questions. I am running a BH 8 gallon prem kettle with 3" column both section connected, no cooling lines connected, running tap water. Filled to 6 US gallons I had a BH 1" NPT coupler welded from them with a 5500 watt heater installed. I am running 240 volts then changing over to 120 volts when up to temp. Here are heat times, temperatures, and current readings. Sorry didn't format well from an Excel sheet, I added underscores to try to it keep easier to read. ____________________Temp_____Temp_____Time_______Current Start________________ 28.8 c____ 84.8 f___11:30 AM Full boil_____240V_____103.7 c___218.7 f___11:50 AM____20.9 amps Maintain____120V _____103.2 c___217.8 f___12:15 PM____10.5 amps If the pic comes through it is the element installed using ring terminals insulated and wrapped in heat shrink tubing with wire ties helping to taper fit. The stainless steel clamp is where the ground wire attaches (underneath out of sight)

Fusefinder, are you useing some kind of current control on your heating element?? Something like a router speed controller. You might must just have to adjust it for proper control.

Seems to recall the story went he has a router controller on the 110 portion of the equation. He bound to have went to go poo and the hawgs ate him or something. That happen to some of my kin ya know?

"Yes, I do have a Rockler unit. This is just raw data to give someone who is on the fence about which unit to buy or what type of heat to use, some information on heat times and current usage. Thats why I was running full throttle!
BTW the heater discussed was sold as a 5500 watt heater. The calculation based on known valuables is 240v x 20.9 amps= 5016 watts and at 120v x 10.5 amps= 1260 watts.
I built this based on values I had stuck in my head and a little bit of help from Scotty on the element and where to find it cheap."

I used a stainless hose clamps for the ground wires too.

Well lets not be bragging on Scotty too much..he liable to get the big head or something. lol. Could be difficult to beam us up in that condition. Might interfere with his Fazer or something. Person needs to think of all the angles on these kinda deals. Now somebody kindly pick apart my idear of using two 110 elements. This be since I aint got 220 in the man cave and cant afford the amount of beer it take to get the drunken shade tree electrician out there to hook it up. So far there aint no rush on the brain power. Just something to think about in the long run.

Run both to start and shut one down when heat comes up. Put the router control in one line. 2 separate breakers woyld be wise for the setup. I almost moved to texas 8 years back but i wiped out my kz1300 so i never made the trip to look for places. Now knowing BW im glad i never moved there. [IMG]  [/IMG]"

Hey now...looks like you done swiped my biker vest with the king sized hidden pockets. I normally carry a Sig .40 on the left an a pint o shine on the right. Balances right on out. Sorta like a bra for a lady I guess. Have put many miles on couple of rice burners. I loves your style Sir. Salud. Got any tats?

Funny. my right pocket has the 6 shot first edition colt agent. I almost never drink though. When i was 17, I was boing to coney island(brooklyn) with my friends for a tatoo. I asked my dad if he approved. He said of course he di but i better find a diferent place to live on the way back. I had a very good childhood and home. SOOOOO no tatoo lol lol"

Sounds like your Daddy was a smart fellow. Think some of the tatted up kids we are seeing will surely live to regret it. Just a feeling. Sure like the looks of that bike. I started out with a Honda 360 back when old Shep was still a pup..then eventually wound up with a Suzuki 1100. That one would fly. If I ever get another it will be a large displacement Harley clone such as a Kawasaki Vulcan.

This was a drag bike on the street. 1266 cc and every engine mod you could dream of. I had the engine built by Murdoch racing in safety harbor florida  "

I went out to buy a Harley a few times..always chickened out when I saw the price tag. An old motor jock down at Corpus tole me one time...the only good thing about a Harley is it looks like a Motorcycle should look. Otherwise they are slow..heavy..and wobbly. He was trying to trade his 74 off for a Kawasaki 900 which was the rage at that time. AMF was messing up the quality something fierce. They were a joke during that time frame. Think my Suzuki was the L model. Low Rider with a shaft drive. Could be a little torquey under the right circumstances..or wrong maybe. Had it up past 140 a few times. Glad the Lord watches out for fools..lol.

I bougt the harley a couple of years old-- i did it strictly on looks. I expected a mechanican piece of junk. I was very surprised. Nothing and i mean nothing ever went wrong with it. Yes it was slow lol The 400 bergman scooter parked behind the harley was way faster off the line. And i know how to drag race a bike.

Right after I ordered my Kettle with a single coupler I read your post about duel couplers. Thought that was a good idea but a bit too late!
Using two 120v heaters would open up more versatility, and there is always a backup installed, or just cap off if its not needed, but you will always have it.
