"Bought a 10 gallon oak barrel and it arrived unholey. Drilling a hole isn't a problem but as I understand it, the bunbghole is tapered and that's a hole of a different color. All I can find are hand operated antique bunghole drills. I read a message on a forum from someone who bought one and couldn't get it to work because it was too dull and he couldn't figure out how to sharpen it. I'd ratrher find something a little more modern. The biggest step drill bit I can find only goes to 1 3/8 inch. I'd prefer a 2 inch hole. Besides, I'm not even sure a step bit would get the job done.

Has anyone here ever tackled this problem?"

Here's a segment on a barrel making place in manysoto. One clear pic of the bit they are using to make the bung hole.

So you could buy a cheap spade bit and grind down the sides to create the taper.

Good find, BW!

Thanks to both of you. Quite helpful. Never thought of taking a hole drill to the grinder, that will most definitely work. :)"
