Got my BH still a couple of days ago and am ready to do the sacrificial run after doing the cleaning run which is my question or concern. I started yesterday with the reflux configuration (w/o the copper scrubbers). I ran for 6 hours but shut down because the diffusion plate had melted due to the high heat from my propane burner. I was running it in my garage and became concerned of the whole nature of the run. Today I moved my new still to an outbuilding configured as traditional mode and restarted the still. After running for 8 hours the temp never got above 92C. There was only 2+ gallons in the pot and about 2 pints of distilled h20 in the collection container. My question is 'have i run enough vinegar/water thru the still to do the proper cleaning' even though all the mixture was not completely cooked? Where do I go from here?

CC It wll be good with what you got done. If you burned up the plate you are turning the heat way to far up. Nothing about distilling is fast in that low and slow is the word when cooking. Make sure you roll the copper mesh and fill the bottom . Try blowing through it after you get it filled. You should not have any trouble blowing air thought it. Next do you have a wash ready to run in the still. If so you do not want to fill your pot more than 3/4 full. Put your column on and place your thermo plug in the top. Start your heat on low and wait. It will take somewhere around a hour and a half for the temp to start coming up. When I does turn the heat down and water on full and let it run another hour. Now start backing off the water and try and hold temp at around 173F . don't worry so much about the temps as how fast the output is coming out. Should have steady drops but no streams. You are going to through out all of the first run it just to clean the still so don't worry about how to collect it.Now with that said get back to reading. There is still a lot you need to know about collecting and making cuts. Oh yea welcome to a great new hobby.

"Hearty congrats on the acquisition. Sorry to hear about the nice diffuser plate. Happens fairly frequent to them who uses propane and gets too frisky. Bound to work just fine without it since mi amigo showed me how to boil water in a dixie cup whilst the heat was coming out of a cutting torch. As long as there is liquid in the bucket there should be no problemo. Vinegar and water should have about the boiling point of water. Has to get mighty hot to make it perk right. Sure the sacrifice run wont treat a person near as shabby. Not sure about the centigrade or assorted other european metrics. I was taught a fly weighs about a gram an a fly turd weighs a milligram..or maybe killogram. I gets confused easy on that stuff. Best of fortunes. Holler anytime. Think you getting some good advice on the previous post. Happy hooching. Cough up another hundred for the hot plate. Works great.
