It depends on your resources and time frame. You could order a ferrel like this and weld it on the lid.
https://www.brewershardware.com/...Clover-Ferrule-Long.html
Then one like this for pipe side solders on.
https://www.brewershardware.com/...lover-Ferrule-Short.html
and of course the tri-clamp to go with it.
https://www.brewershardware.com/1.5-Tri-Clover-Clamp.html
Thats about 15 bucks and you have a very secure sealable connection. If you don't have the means to weld the ferrel onto the lid you could probably get it done at an exhaust shop though youd have to play that one by feel.
Otherwise you can drill and tap the lid, depend on how thick it is and your access to a fairly expensive 1" tap.
If you have mapp gas or an oxy actelyne torch you drill or dremel a hole to fit your npt fitting and then braze it in with food grade silver braze. Once done it makes a sturdy joint. Its expensive as all heck though. I paid 50 bucks for 6 sticks.
Again depends on what you got to work with and your time frame. I think the tri clover clamp is the best route to go personally.

Yeah, I like that. I would buy the ferrule and secure it to the lid with bolts; I have no welder.

I have a bunch of ferrels here and see no possible way to bolt them down. The flanged end goes up.
If you live in or near a city i would just take it to an exhaust shop that does stainless. They will likley do it very cheap. Its nothing to them, take longer to set up then to weld it. Or put out feelers amongst friends for someone with a mig or tig welder. Just tell them you are making beer and its a fitting for a temp probe for your mashtun.

Wow...after reading all this technical stuff..feels like I could build my own ghetto still out of a stock pot. Fact is I did that one time..it did no work too good..but that was back when I was just guessing at some of the more exotic aspects of the scenario. I feels a lot more confident now. Very interesting thread.

Why be an ass? Its a homestill, not a ghetto still. Take a look at some commercial stills then look at what you got. Its all ghetto compared to the real thing.
Look at that huge tower in the background. Wicked.

This is what I was trying to describe. I meant flange when I said ferrule. Sorry, I usually come off as stupid.

Looking Good!! I betcha R2D2 would fall madly in love with it. I priced the top bowl at Bed Bath and Beyond one time. Thirty bucks and some change. Would not want to use an el cheapo bowl at that location. I already own the huge fancy high dollar waffle bottom All Clad brand stew/chili/gumbo pot on the bottom. That was 150 and come as a Christmas gift from Santa and Williams Sonoma..via the Warden one year. Goofy airplane flying pal bought one just like at some chain store in the mall for forty bucks. Really got me hot. I think somebody already mention you can pick them up cheap like that sometimes.

Thanks for the link!

When it comes to sealing, can I use silicone? I'm afraid the alcohol would dissolve it.

teflon tape or edpm o-ring or flour paste. Im not sure but i wonder about a regular old cork gasket? Easy enough to make if you have some gasket stock. No silicone. You can use silicone to seal the tubing and fittings in your condenser as that does not touch product.

Some more copper porn for the fun of it.

Wow thats an impressive arrangement...congrats to the proud owner. One tidbit which I heard about as regarding gaskets. The mentor say..make a gasket out of cork..then give it a double wrap of teflon tape. Works about a hundred times better than the cheesy O rings which come with the keg to column attaching kits. I would not be scared to take that one to the bank considering the Source. If a person is stuck with a leaky old Snuffy Smith type stew pot still..the other Mentor say use Rye Flour for the paste. If you got some left after the patch job guess it could be added to the wash or mash etc. Did not quite devolve into that aspect of the situation.

Does the size of the boiler matter? I have an electric stove, and would like to use it, but I don't want to wait for ever to warm up. What's the right size? (Keep in mind I have an 18 inch column and 20 foot x 1/2 inch condenser)

8 gallon be ideal for most folks I think. That let a person run a five or six gallon fermenter of wash/mash and still give it some beathing room. I sprung for the 15 gal model but have yet to max it out. The 1500 Watt Hoplate get me up to temps in 90 mins since the weather has heated up. Take two hours and some change in the winter. Most important thing on a standard hooch maker relying on electric heat is it cant cycle. Got to be constant. You might need to bypass the thermostat on the cook stove. I would really not like to cook that marvelous elixer inside the crib. It make gasoline and its accompanying explosive fumes seem non combustible by comparison. Now if a person just got to do it..kindly send any innocent wimmen and chillins to Grannys house. Thanks. Happy hoochin.

The big element on a stove is 240v and 2500watts. Substantially more powerful the a 120v hotplate. The problem is its easy to crush the burner by overloading it. If you use some nuts or washer to support the weight of the pot you can really load it up. The burner will easily produce at 1 gallon and hour plus. You won't be able to run that fast if you want decent flavor but the burner is plenty capable.

Your stove doesn't cycle. You ever used one? Cmon on dude. Those crappy heating hotplates cycle, not a stovetop. Put your stove burner on high and see what happens. It turns red and stays red. A hotplate not so much.
Who would you listen to, the person that's done it or the persons that's heard about?"

Thanks for the info. I did some research and it seems that electric stove burner controlls are indeed continuousle variable devices.

Again, Thanks for the help.:)"

i always thought that they cycled. I use gas for the last 8 years and dont have a clear rememberance. I googled it and the info said that the controlls worked like a light bulb dimmer. Thats all i found.

Well at any rate cycling is a no no for mashing and distilling. DATS FOE SHOE."
