Hey folks. Getting ready to build my first still. Thinking 3/8" line with an 18" column to 18 degree decline to about 9 feet of condenser through ice water (basic pot still). Going to use a 12 quart SS stock pot set up as a double boiler with an electric burner. Any idea what I can expect for quantity of final product from 5 gallons of a corn wash after heads (about 1/2 pint?)? This is my very first run, and I would like a bit of a clue as to what to expect. Not too worried about quality yet as I know this a learning curve and everyone has different taste, but I know what I like from knowing and tasting some hooch from some 'shiners in the family. They're all either passed on or retired from this hobby. when I was younger and could have really learned something from those guys, I wasn't interested. Such is life! Thanks for any advice/wisdom you guys have! :)

It all depends on your corn wash how much potential you've produce in your mashing process or how much sugar you've added. Also the yeast you choose has an effect on the quantity. The short answer is I've gotten a pint and I've gotten 2 1/2qts from 5 gal mash"

Sorry, I should have been more specific. 4.5 lbs of cracked corn, 8 lbs of sugar and baker's yeast and water to make 5 gallons of wash. Steady temp of 175 (plus or minus 5 degrees). Also does it make a difference if I use brown sugar as compared to white, or a combo of the two?

"With that recipe you should get around 1 qt of hearts maybe a little more. Just use pint jars and fill them bout half full. Be sure to number them. Make your cuts the next day. Throw out the fores and keep the good smelling stuff.

I've found it easier to make the cuts using the half full pints. Once you get a few runs down you will know when to make the cuts by smell and taste, then you don't need the pint jars at half full."

How much water popapina? Sounds like a 10 gallon wash.

Curios as to the yeast and quantity you use in this recipe? Do you use a certain brand name? And how much do you use for your 5 gal recipe? I've been using the Lavlin EC 1118 in the BW sugar wash recipe. And can I assume you're pot stilling? I'm just starting out and would like to try different recipes. Thanks for your input."

We use Turbo Black Lable from here. I use the whole pack. Reflux to 160 proof
