Hey Bee..yeppers think your right. Get it too big so you have some room for expansion. Sides the 15's do half loads just fine and supposedly are a lot easier to clean since it has s a big hole to work through. I just love mine to death and have never maxed it out. The 8's have a much tighter space to work..scrub etc. If I can ever get a ferment birthed I am moving over to ten gallon runs. I think the big bucket could handle that just fine. Take care.

I dont think it will be too outrageous. Sure it will be sorta like Fox News..aka..Fair and Balanced. I do not have to put up with that nonsense since I just drive over and pick it up. Hopefully you can dodge the bullet on the state highway robbery...er I mean sales tax. That is fixing to change rapidly from what is being said on TV. Best act today. The guv'ment is lean and hongry. Hopefully they will not devour us all. Do not think a person could go wrong with the big milk bucket. Hoping we'uns is still leaning in that direction. How you gonna heat it up? I love my hot plate..lol.

Well...glad you axed. I hate Propane. Its expensive..a pain in the coola to get it filled up..can kill a person without provocation etc. Spring for the hotplate. Now if you gonna have any room left on the Onyx visor card..get Rick from BH to mount you a couple of 110 heating elements from Lowes in the sides of that puppy. That is how the smart folks do it. One runs nekked the other hooked to a twenty buck router speed controller from Harbor Freight. Now if a person dont get greedy on the amounts the hotplate works too and much cheaper. Hope I dont sound too opinionated on some of these issues. Whatever works for you Brother. All my kin on my Daddys Mammas side is NC refugees. You cant do no wrong in my book. Now my paternal Grandpas folks was from Tenn. Maybe we can clash:) Take care. Always glad to chat with you. Happy Hoochin!!

"Hi Bee, I use propane along with quite a few of the others on this site. I find it to be cheaper than electricity and a heck of a lot more portable. I can get 6 to 8 runs off of a 20Lb tank. It heats the boiler up a lot faster than the electrics do and is easier to control. The burner I use is a ""Blichmann"" burner. It's more expensive,($130.00), than a turkey frier but a heck of a lot more controlable. Just bring your wash up to a boil then turn the burner way down. I turn mine down to where it's almost going out. Just make sure you have no leaks and good ventalation without wind being on the still or burner. I use a fan put off to the side to draw air through the window and out the door of the shed when the air is still. As with any set up keep a fire extinguisher hand, just in case. Never had any problems with this set up and very happy with the results. I did however extend the condencer drop tube by three feet with a 1/2"" to 3/8"" compression reducer and a piece of 3/8"" copper tubing. You need to pickle the brass compression reducer by boiling it in a solution of 50-50 viniger and water for a few minutes untill it turns a brighter yellow. this keeps any lead from leaching out of the brass into your product.
Have fun"

Actually, Bayou Ruler had a different take on pickling brass:

A 'Pickling Solution' of two parts White Vinegar to one part Hydrogen Peroxide (common 3% solution) will remove the surface Lead from brass parts when they are soaked for 5 minutes or less at room temperature. The brass will turn a buttery yellow color as it is cleaned. If the solution starts to turn green and the brass darkens, then the parts have been soaking too long and the copper in the brass is beginning to dissolve, exposing more Lead. The solution has become contaminated and the part should be re-cleaned in a fresh pickling solution.

If we could ever get these folks sobered up they bound to realize it much less painful to invest in a short step ladder and set the collection jar on the appropriate step. Lot of dumb yankmees hang out on here apparently.

"Old Swamp, I went with the 15 gallon kettle and it seems to work fine. I started makin 5 gallon runs then moved up to 10 gallons. Now if i have lots of time (about 3 1/2 hours) I run 10 gallons, but mostly run 5 gallons and it takes under 2 hours. I have been using Bayou-Rulers birdwatchers recipe, everyone loves it!

As for heat, I dont plan on using my unit in my den so I went with propane. It brings my pot with 5 gallons of wash to temp in 30 minutes on the nose. Then as stated by others I turn the heat way down and run a pint of high shots every 15 minutes, which I cut to almost a quart. I marked the dial where to set it after it reaches temp so its repeatable everytime. I can get 5to 6 runs on a 18 dollar bottle of propane, about 3 bucks a run.

As for refilling it, almost every grocery store and even wallyworld has the neat propane bottle exchange goin on. You drop off your empty bottle, go in and pay for a full one, and some teenager will gladly come get you a full tank and carry it to the truck if you wish. How can you beat a deal like that ??? Also, if you know much about cooking anything you'll know propane is MUCH easier to regulate, increase, decrease and adjust than electric. I had an unused turkey fryer handy and i've been using it for almost 3 months without incident.

I DO keep a charged water hose with nozzle handy just in case Murphy decides to stop by.

Hope that helps.
Farmin"
