WOW! Tex I think you are right on the money. I ran water too and it came off at 199 also, I thought it was the Therm placement ( didn't even think of the Alt) I run mine up to a boil as well and then drop back to med. I am using a 850w hot plate with low, med, high settings. When I drop back to med I can still hear a boil in the pot, I bet I am runnin too hot. My last run at that 182 came off at 106 proof smelt good taste good and had a hell've buzz to it. 93 % of my 182 degrees would put me actually running about in the 170 range as far as when my good stuff comes off. Man I sure tell you I appreciate all the good info you help me with. I know there is a learning curve with all this fun but you have sure helped me shorten mine. Thanks a bunch. Should have some good stuff to try this theroy out on in a few days!

"Now seems like you got a pot still..if so it can be fun to look at the gauge if you got one but think our Whitewolf pal hit it in that the essential items are heat control and the flow rate. Give it heat till it comes out right...output supposed to be the size of a pencil lead..but a rapid drip works too. Put a piece of tape over the gauge so you cant see it and get stressed..lol. When you get tired of collecting stinky tails quit. The temp guidance charts can start some debate. Think a drunk person may have come up with that. For instance I talk to folks on here who never break 170 on the refluxers..where temp gauge watching can be more useful but they dont seem to be collecting methanol or kryptonite etc. That stuff has to go out with the fores. In fact the opposing view say the slower and cooler you run it and still get hooch the more pure it is. I do not trust anything them rude foul tempered ignorant yankee wannabe injuneers on the off branded .org site have to say. Hope this helps. I was thinking it may be because of my Therm, but now I am thinking that I am actually running it too hot. Whats you guys thoughts on this? I am in the Mt.'s at 6600 ft elevation do you think that has anything to do with it. Any advice appreciated.:) "

Bound to be them shining genes you got. Thats some hot stuff coming off that pot still for a single pass is amazing. You doing something right Sir. Dont go tweaking anything:) I dont ever measure the abv of the individual jars..only the grand total of them which aint overly stinky. All that stuff mixed up comes up to 170 through the BH CM..lol. I like to use them fancy terms. Anyway..hit a low of 160 with Bayous neutral...and 120 when I switched it over to the pot mode. Converting that gizmo is a pain in the coola. Everybody needs a SEPARATE pot still. lol.

Ok well get that Skilsaw sharpened up. That stuff supposed to taste good when dunked in a jar fulla hooch. Way I got it figgered out is Angels can pass through wood without a problemo. Apparently glass stops em cold..unless some dummy happen to drop it on the cement floor..woops then they all rush in to get some..lol.

Hmmm..you know a person could use the "saw" in question to cut them barrels half in two and plant some tomaters or something like that down in there. Hey I seen this somewhere. Aint nothing mo betta on a good old baloney sandwich than home growed tomaters. Give it some thought.

Well, ran 2 gallons off last week and got 2 pints of good hooch without a temp gauge. Didn't have time to run off the other 3 gallons till this morning. Got a full quart off of that of good hooch. Running a gallon at a time is real pain! Just using a hot plate and run off the first 1/4 cup or so for fores, and then let it run steady in a thin stream. Smells and tastes good, quite a kick to it too! My guess would be about 120 proof. Made a real difference when I ran the second batch after letting it sit for a week and letting it cook on it's own when I found the magic setting on the thermostat, ran like a dream! Tough to keep my twitchy fingers off the heat control though LOL! Time for a bigger still, gonna build a 5 gallon this weekend I think.

Congrats..sounds like a great outcome. I got two quarts to proof up from the last run. Not sure I get the energy up for that today..since I still got drinking material on hand. Got about a quart and a half of sorta smelly tails which I have been trying to air out in the hooching shack. Got to sipping around on it yesterday. Wasnt too bad if you hold the breath. Burnt going down. Must be purty strong. May have to go check it again here in a bit..lol. Thinking I eyeball it and dilute it with some Ozarka water. That should tame it down a bit dontcha think?

Mine's a bit strong, been adding a touch of ginger ale. Thinking I may have got a bit of tails in the mix, smells a bit off, but tastes fine! As you may have guessed, I'm not much of a straight up whiskey kinda guy.
