I am using a 20L pot still. To heat it i am using a 1500 watt heating plate. I was wondering once after the vapor temp is around 81 C do i turn down the heating plate or do i keep it at high until i reach my tails point in the distillation? I am not sure how long the run should take or if i am supposed to raise and lower the temp according to the output flow.

run on high till you start boiling full ur condsider when it is. wait till you start getting ur first few drops out the end and kick the heat down to low - med u want just a few drops at a time to start it going to take about 4 to 5 hours to run

4 to 5 hours for only 5L? That seems really excessive. A website i went onto had a run time of only 2 hours for a 24 L mash. Are you suggesting 4 to 5 hours because that gives the best quality?

are u running 5L or 20L ? i run a 5 gal still myself on a wash run i full with 4.5 gals i being it up to boil like i said till i get drops. it takes me 4 to 5 hours to run it i get about a pint a hr . slow and steady will make good taste hooch if you run to fast more favors you do want will come over .

Great question Scottius. Was wondering that myself. Now I have trouble to figure out how a person could clown around with a pot still for that long. I can whip out six gallons from the fancy refluxer in 3.5 hrs counting the warmup up time of 90 mins in hot weather. Yall best trade them old pots in for cash. Copper is real high ya know?

I am running 5 L mashes because i am testing different mashes out to find out which mix gives the best taste.

hell scotty didnt even think to ask that lol. big bite my big shiney metal ass i love my copper still lol . beside thats just striping runs for me and i was off on my time by the way took 3 an half hrs to run todays 7 pints lows wines doing a spirit run thursday got 3 gals of 50 abv low wines spirit runs move alot fast in my still than a wash run

What do you mean modified? I put the still on top of it and turn it on...

Soon as you start to get yield then you reduce the heat to get a slow steady drip. an un modified hot plate can not do this. It will shut off and on causing intermittent yield so you by pass the controll so the hotplate is on high at all times. then you use a router control to reduce the voltage to where you still get a steady drip."

It is very easy. The thing is NOT plugged in when you do it lol lol You need to buy about about a 20 amp router speed control. The mod is extremly simple. Actually the hotplate 1500 watts pulls 12.5 amps so a 15 amp control should work. I liked the 25 amp rockler because it is a bit oversized. choose from here if you like http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?...eed+control&_sacat=0 (((Just an added note))) I see 2000 watt hotplates popping up here and there. If you want a more powerfull hot plate later on, 2000 watts pulls a hair under 17 amps."
