rODGER, MY REFLUX STILL COST ME IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF 200 DOLLARS BY THE TIME I WAS DONE WITH IT AND THAT WAS WITHOUT A KEG, MY NEIGHBOR GAVE ME ONE. THEN YOU HAVE THE LABOR IN PUTTING IT TOGETHER AND MAKING IT RIGHT. THERE IS A LOT OF SATIFACTION IN DOING THAT, BUT IT TAKES TIME AND EQUIPMENT TO DO IT. YOU MAKE YOUR OWN CALL THERE. BOTTOM LINE IS THAT I THINK THE COST OF MAKING ONE VS THE COST OF BUYING ONE IS ABOUT THE SAME IN THE END. YOU GET REALLY GOOD PRODUCT WITH THE REFLUX AND YOU HAVE THE CONTROL AND YOU CAN EXPERIMENT A LOT WITH IT, AND IT IS FUN. YOUR CALL NOW, OH, CAN YOU GET THE MATERIALS YOU NEED FOR THE REFLUX? 2' AND THE FITTINGS IN COPPER ARE HARD TO FIND. CHECK THAT OUT.....HOPE THIS DOSEN'T CONFUSE YOU MORE...JIMBULL

I have several thoughts on your issue.

1st, I wouldn't built the valved reflux unit - unless - I did some more research on it. It has its own set of problems inherent in the design. I would suggest that you visit http://www.homedistiller.org/ as a great source of information on distillation. If you want to build your own, by all means do so. You have much better choices than the valved reflux design. [or modifications to it that make it much better]

2nd, The Pro Series II that Brewhaus offers is an excellent piece of equipment. Jimbull pointed out that costs in building your own can be quite impressive and parts to execute the design difficult to find. With the Pro Series, you are ready to go as is at a reasonable cost. The unit can simply and directly attach to a sanke beer keg as a boiler choice. Plus: Rick is ready, willing and able to stand behind his product with information and support. ,I'm not affiliated - just a long time & well satisfied customer.,

Anyway, I do hope that you enjoy your adventure.

I like building things, but when I priced copper tubing, I decided to buy a Brewhaus Still. I have plenty of other projects to work on! I haven't seen it discussed, but it seems a huge amount of heat is lost through the sides of the boiler. It seems that it is important to insulate it. Has anyone done this? I am thinking of buying some kind of insulation but am not sure what would be best. I don't want to create a fire hazard or get something that will make me itch.

I bought a hotplate at Walmart, but now am sorry I didn't buy the 1550 watt one from Brewhaus. It was only $10 more but is apparently more suitable. Even with a small test charge of H2O, the still is kind of wobbly on the Walmart toy.
