"I have only had one experience with carbon filtering. It was bad. I used the swish in a jar method ( incorrectly though))
So I decided to buy a SS rig.

Does any one have personal experience comparing the munktel filter with coffee filters?:)"

"I've found that doubling up on regular coffee filters works, not because it will filter more but for durability.
Also, I have the same SS rig as you. I went and bought one of those surveyers tripods from home depot and the center hole of the tripod is large enough for the tube of the rig to go through. I just have to remember to attach the filters after the unit is on the tripod. Very sturdy and works great.
Here is a link to the tripod I got if you are interested. http://www.homedepot.com...tripod&storeId=10051

Cheers!"

Thanks for the tip. I want to have an angle bracket attached to the wall so i can raise and lower the rig with a pulley, I had a cross bar welded into the bucket. I just got notice that it was shipped. I will look at the tripod as soon as i post this.

Thanks again.

"Hey Scotty,
I've never tried, I always just used a 4 liter glass jug that the cheap wine comes in and it fits under it just fine.

Do you have some sort of time frame or drip rate information. I am curious because i have a needle valve installed at the bottom and i envision many hours passing even all day and overnight for 3 to 5 gallons being run through

Im studying the carbon filter e book.

Hey Scotty,
I have a steady stream that flows a little faster than the stream you get during a stripping run. It will start to slow down when the top bucket gets low. I just use the filters on the end and have it drip into a glass funnel atached to my jug, so I couldn't give you a percise figure.
Your needle valve will probably give you a more constant flow."

Hey Scotty do you have a picture of the way you set up the needle valve? I'd like to also see the valve it's self if possible.
Thanks

Hi Scotty, Thanks for the photos. That looks Great. I think controlling your flow with the needle valve is an excellent idea.

I went thru the 'carbon learning curve' several years ago...finally settled down to a quarter cup per gallon of 100 proof.....pour it in and wait a few days.....then filter it thru a chemical tolerant funnel stuffed with cotton...I get a pint about every 30 minutes...faster than I drink it...:>)....works as well as anything I used previously......Google Brownian Motion if you arent already familiar with it.....

Unit is the cotton trick how you get the carbon all out of your product? Whenever i tried filtering through carbon i always ended up with black specks in my product, even if put it through coffee filters several times afterwards. I gave it up altogether as i never really noticed a taste difference in whisky. But i'd like to try some neutrals again soon and would like to give it another go.

I made this unit from PVC/ABS pipe/fittings I had laying around. The top funnel has a lid, a removable screen and holds a liter. At the bottom I used a ordinary garden spigot to throttle the output. It works super great, was inexpensive to build and can be collapsed for storage. I made this as a prototype thinking I could sell some but later decided not to due to the expense to ship. It would take a small and a medium flat rate USPS shipping boxes and between the shipping, materials and time, figure it not a feasible product to make a decent profit. It IS built according to the scientific dimensions as I researched it first. The pipe is 1.5" dia. X 60" long and like I said, works great. The most important thing I found was that the throttling feature is an absolute must have. It also holds two bags of charcoal as shown, 1 bag of each size mixed together fills it up perfectly. I, of course, would rather have something made from ss, but hey, a guy's gotta' use what he has on hand when money is tight. All in all, I'm happy with the results. I've used it 5 times without any problems. I'd be happy to supply a parts list if anyone wants it although I figure that the majority of people here could easily figure it out.
