EC-1118 for a 5 to 6 gallon sugar wash? 1 or 2 5g packets?

John Do you pitch the yeast in its dry form??

I use two packs rehydrated in some of the wash for 1/2 to 1 hour before pitched. That's with any type of yeast I use.

No I don't pitch it dry. I took some of the wash and poured it into a bowl added a small bit of sugar and put the yeast EC1118 in there to kick in before adding it to the 6 gallon wash.
I only used one packet however I have a few more unopened packs. I was a bit unclear on how much to pitch.

The only time i use more than one pack of ec1118 on a 6 gallon wash is if i am trying to ferment a 14% potential alcohol sugar wash.
The way you re hydrate will also give the packet a chance to acclimate to the wash.


I have read somewhere about yeast shock and it said to re hydrate in a light sugar water then add the rehydrated yeast to some wash to acclimate it.

If you want a stronger start which i dont think is necessary, I use the water first then the wash next. Be sure the wash used in your rehydration process is aerated first so the yeast multiplys better.
Naturally a well areated main wash will allow the yeast to populate ((multiply in the aerobic stage before making alcohol )) the main wash better also.

I realise that i rambled on but i can not talk about yeast without getting into a strong starter bottle thing :)
