Hello ,
I need a resource for a temp controller ,digital/analog, with a thermocouple to rig up a heating element in a beer keg boiler. Thanks for any help

Hi Mike, Sounds like you may have about the same boiler as I do. What I did was to wire up a Love temperature controller with a solid state relay wired to a receptacle and a thermocouple that I put in the top of my column. 1500 watts at 120 volts pulls about 12 amps, thus the need of a relay. I have some surplus electrical items, the rest I got from ebay or an electrical supply house. This works really great! When the temp reaches my desired setpoint 174, the controller cuts power to the element for about 4 seconds and then heats for about 6 seconds. I see no temperature change on my thermometer,also mounted in top of the column.I'm new at this but I knew I had to find a good way to regulate the temp. Please let me know if you come up with anything better.

I/m in the heat treating business so we use a lot of high tech controllers. I'm rigging a ramp controller to a relay ,because the controler cannot handle the switching power internally, and will be able to program the rate of temperature rise and any temperature hold points that I desire. I haven't run anything beside water at this point but will soon. Omega engineering ,omega.com, has some good and cheap temp controllers and stainless steel thermocouples. I have noticed, when running water that the still maintains a constant temp for about two hours and then as the column heats, the temp rapidly spikes to about 212F

I would be interested in the final set up. Sounds like being able to better control the column heat would result in maximizing the recovery of the different azetropes.

Thanks for the response, This is obviously the best way to control a boiler. Could you please specify the brand and model of your controller, relays,thermocouple as well as your configuration. Thanks for the info , it is appreciated very much.

The best way is to go to W.W. Grainger and pick up all of the items that you need. Keep in mind that the controler, thermocouple extension wire and thermocouple must be compatable. I use a Type k because that is the standard at our shop
Items needed:
Ramp and hold controller $150 - 300
Relay
Thermocouple extension wire.
S/S thermocouple.
Mounting box
