"I think it might be interesting to discuss any of the information found in Strands E-BOOK.

Naturally i am most interested now because i am soon to be taking delivery of the carbon filtering unit.

The first thing i noticed in reading a recently downloaded version of the E_BOOK is that the word ABSORBTION is used rather than ADSORBTION; but i see that my e book is older and not by Strand either. I dont really think the word is of any consequence.

To date and i have no experience to prove differently; but i have felt that slow fermenting and slow distilling would produce as good a product as those who carbon filter.

My main experement will be when i run a few gallons of vodka heads through the carbon and see if it cleans them up noticably..

Any comments pro or con are welcome:)"

Scotty,

What do you expect the carbon to actually remove from your heads? Some of esters or something else?

It's never been clear to me how (or if) the filtration actually works on anything other than suspended solids. Do you have a link to a pdf or a web page that describes the details?

I dont think that carbon filtering has anything to do with clarification((removing any solids))

I believe that the hearts of our run have the less fusel oils that cause the pure alcohol to have slightly off flavor from no flavor at all.

I think that carbon filtering heads will produce the closest thing to flavorless alcohol that we at home are capable of.

I'm guessing the even hearts can be improved with carbon filtering.

The E book is on the brewhaus website. ill get it in a second.

I seem to be having trouble accessing the brewhaus supply link but the E-BOOK is on the left if you scroll all the way down.

Here is a link to information related to carbon filtering.

http://homedistiller.org/distill/polish

I noted that there is no quick and easy way ((TO DO IT PROPERLY ))

This is where i first got the idea of using the method where the carbon is added directly to a volume of alcohol.

I gave up on carbon filtering right after using that method.

There is however a ton of information at this link.

Understood ... I wasn't talking about clarification either. The "bad" stuff gets trapped in the pores of the carbon ... that was the extent of my knowledge. So I assumed the bad stuff couldn't be a liquid, otherwise it couldn't get trapped in the first place.

The part I was missing (and was made clear in the first few pages of the book) was that the carbon apparently filters at the molecular level. Pretty amazing. So now I get it -- thanks for the link!

Please let us know how your experiments turn out.

I still have to just take thier word for it JB. I guess fusel oils have a diferent molecular structure than better grade alcohol. I wish i had a knowledge of chemistry or physics.

I just added another high tech mod to the SS carbon filter device
If i can hang the unit from a pulley as i would like to, i can raise and lower it to load the carbon and the alcohol. Then this gizmo will allow me to lower the rig into a carboy and keep out any visitors

I just copied part of a document on how the carbon filters out the bad stuff.

It is a genral explanation and just about enough for me.

It would be great if someone with more knowledge could add to the SIMPLE EXPLANATION

it didnt paste---ill try another foremat

no luck sorry
