Been reading different people adding big packs or certain grams of yeast to their mash.. I ferment 4.5 gallons at a time and only put one pack of bread yeast in there with 5-8 lbs sugar.. Is this ok or to little?

Was thanked: 15 time(s) in 15 post(s)
"MK did you --rehydrate your yeast?. It seems to get going really good in that case. Its not absolutly a must but it does seem to help.
I use 1 most of the time but maybe mine is not as good as I think.
Keep notes on how the ferment went (temps and time span) and let us know if it worked out the way you had hoped. I think you'll be fine."

I don't rehydrate no... Once it's cooled under 85F I stir it and get a nice swirl going and slowly pour it in as im stirring. I seen your conversation with bigwheel about that though and think I will do it next time so I know its going good. My ferment is going fine just didn't know if some more yeast would help it in any

By all means try Heeler's strategy of getting the yeast a running start in a small batch of cooled down wash. Cant hurt a thing. Two pinches multiply like rabbits on that deal. Make that high dollar yeast last longer. An hour later drop a quarter cup of bread yeast. Five bucks a pound at Sams. That can kick the wash up to notches hitherto unknown. My wash checker sunk so deep this morning I flat could not hardly find it.
