Hey yall, just started 2nd mash with apples. Went with 7 pounds apples, 9 pounds sugar, and 5 Tbsp regular yeast. Been stirring it once a day for 3 days now and it's looking good! I'll keep ya posted!

Thanks for the update!! Think from the mocking birds and squirrels my apples is now history. I did manage to make some good apple dumplings early in the year. Are we in the sippin stage yet? Will it spin a cowboy hat around in a circle..that be whilst sitting on the head of course. The hat that is.

Interested in the results.. been following the last thread you had. Did you have any distinctive apple flavor in the end result or did the still take that out?

Definitely some apple flavor there, although it is a bit faint. Been mixing with a splash of apple juice and a bit of water. Good stuff!"

Well glad to hear that come out good. Reminds me I need to mix up a batch of apple pie for the cooler months. I get real popular when the ladies think I might haves some pie..lol.

Sounds good. I want to try a fruit fermentation myself sometime.. gonna be awhile though I still got my rye malt I need to try out for my next batch!

I hear ya Big! Made a couple big pots of homemade soup and a double batch of choc chip cookies yesterday and family and friends were darn near banging down my door!

Yum yum..that sounds like two of my favorite food groups. Now did you put any nuts and raisins in the cookies? We had storebought soup for supper last night. Bertoli brand in a bag. Frozen I guess. Feed two people..real good tasting for about six bucks. This was Eyetalian beef I think but they have other flavors or so the Warden say. I put her in charge of buying it..heating it up etc. Now you gonna need to post us your home made recipe when you get around to it. Thanks. I have a grand prize winning beef stew recipe laying around here somewhere. The nights are getting chili and putting folks in mind of hearty fare..woops I got some good recipes for that too. No..it do not have kidney beans or noodleo's in it.

I got a half gallon jug which is 6lbs. The first run I'm going to do this recipe exactly as is..

Liquid Malt Extract (Unhopped), 1 can (~3.3 Lbs\1.5 kg)
Sugar, 5 Lbs (2.27 kg)
Yeast (Refer to manufacturer's recommendations for quantity)
Water (~19 L)

Directions:

Add Liquid Malt Extract to 5 gallons of clean fresh warm water. Note: We are not going to boil this mixture. Boiling can reduce the amount of fermentable sugars available.
Add 5 lbs. of white sugar to the malt and warm water mixture. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Let the mixture cool until it is below 86º F\30º C. If the water is too hot it could kill the yeast. Once the correct temperature has been achieved, pitch in the yeast. Refer to the manufacturer recommendation for the quantity of yeast to add to your mash.

Cover the mash tun with cheese cloth or a fermentation bung if using a carboy. This will prevent particle and bugs from getting into the fermenting mash. CO2 will be produced during the fermentation process so make sure the mash tun is located in a well ventilated area. Fermentation will take approximately 4 days.


...maybe a bit more sugar I dunno I need to see what the PA is with the hydrometer before making my final decision on that. Depending on how it turns out I may use the other half of my malt exactly the same or tweak it somehow.. I dunno yet.

Sounds very kewlish. Bet that be plenty of sugar as it sets. I think malt is also sugar or close seems like. So you got 8 lbs combined for five gallons should be good to go for bread yeast..maybe need to add two lbs for distillers yeast. Just approximating of course. Them gauges are our friend..supposedly..lol. Did you ever check out Popcorns recipe? He claimed to be using canned malt to mash cornmeal..but I think he was hallucinating most likely. Most of the folks I have chatted with about it seem to think the enzymes needed to do the mashing cant survive the canning or bottling etc. Once them things get over about 150 the enzyme activity is not real prevalent. Shame you coulldnt smuggle a little grain into that recipe somewhere. Did you forget that part or is it just sugar..malt and water? Dont make me come down there. Thanks..lol.

You know your right lol.. The malt does add sugar I get rushing on these things and lose my common sense.. I'm just not used to figuring in other things that have sugar so I just figured the 5 wouldn't be enough.. my bad. And ya I read the popcorn recipe here.. http://howtomakewhiskeyh...-real-popcorn-moonshine/ It was one of the reasons I wanted to try malt and I've read all the same about the enzymes.. As far as grain.. I don't have any and its a hour drive to the closest place around me that would sell any. I think I'm going to do my first half without.. and try to get some by the time I use the second half of my malt because it's expensive so I wanna get two test batches out of it and see the differences. I'm sure it will be a pretty tasty drink once the grain is added :)

Sounds like a wiener. Now before we get too set in our path here..let us give the yeastes a bit of of fodder. All of God's Creatures have to eat ya know? Straight sugar in any form can kill us and them all deader than a hammer. Combine that bizness with some of Mamas cornmeal..or swipe pablum from the Baby as is the custom of some who inhabit the swamp land over in the SE Section...which is where the Creature form the Black Lagoon originally spawned himself form the toxic nuclear waste dump in that area.. who is also known as White Wolf..lol. The one well studied Gentleman from the Uk..spoke of the efficacy of Porridge Oats. Which for weuns an usuns tranlates out into Quaker Oats. I am getting all choked up here. The possibilities are endless. I am headed to the Bus Station as we speak.
