This post is inspired by a question i saw about someone with 160 proof alcohol, wishing to make an apple pie drimk of 100 proof for his friend
lets use a quart(32 ounces) for those who dont understand mililiters

The basic formula is as follows

C1 X V1 = C2 X V2

DEFINITIONS FIRST
C1= the concentration of the original hooch(( in this case 80%= 160 proof.
V1 is the volume of the base hooch which is 32 ounces in this case
C2 is the desired result which in this case is 50% ( 100 proof)
V2 is the unknown resulting volume at the desired proof
80X32 = 50x an unknown amount

(80X32)/50 =unknown amount
2560/50 = the unknown amount
51.2 ounces is the unknown amount at 100 proof
51.2 ounces minus 32 ounces =19.2 ounces of zero proof to be added to the 32 ounces of 160 proof to produce 51.2 ounces of the 100 proof drink

SOMEONE PLEASE CHECK MY WORK AND IF IT IS CORRECT, THIS SHOULD BE A STICKY

We have a calculator on our website for this (http://www.brewhaus.com/Calculators-C108.aspx). You can just enter your values (%abv of distillate, %abv desired, volume desired) and it will calculate how much 'base' you need. :)

err on the conservative side. You can always dilute more, but you can never undilute.

Ok whilst the smart folks have on their arithmetic hats here...say a hypothetical remedial math student had 2 qts of 175 proof hooch and mixed it with 2 gallons of non-alcoholic liquid..what would be the proof of the finished product? Thanks.
