Well so some wise cracker got me off chasing rabbits about making cuts here..but then that may be where to start. When it first starts dripping that be the fores and the heads. Generally smell like acetone..paint thinner etc. When it stops smelling at that location it get to hearts which smell like cheap tequila..till it gets to tails on the end which smell like a wet hound dawg or cardboard box depending on which exspurt is consulted. If your overall batch includes the undesirable components it will generally be deemed skunky..and it time to make Apple Pie with it. Ok once it made several methods used to see how strong it is. Most realiable is hooch checking gauge for about 12 bucks. Some of the old hands do what is called checking the bead..which is put it in a jar with a lid and shake it up good. The bigger and few the bubbles which go away fast is a good sign. Many small bubbles which linger around a good while is considered bad. Now for those who have been endowed with an edumacated pallete..they just take a sip and know how much crick water to add to make it tolerable for the wimmen and chillins etc. There is prob some other ways unbeknownst to us amateurs. I think they bound to have laser beams which can shine on it and give the scoop..but aint seen any advertised here lately. I mean they can use one to check the ABV of a persons breath..would be surprising they couldnt do the same favor for hooch huh?

Then again, it burned my nose, not sure if that good or not. I did get big bubbles, and they did go away fast. So i'm guessing that's somewhat good. One thing I did notice, it never would boil over 180. It did produce a lot of vapor. So, i'm not sure why I didn't get much. With that aside, I'm going to try another recipe. And see what I get for results."

"Josh, you will find that the very first stuff to come off your still will indeed smell very strong and it will burn very light blue or even invisable. Its definatley high proof but you dont want to drink that its the foreshots and heads ---you know the yuckies. Thats the stuff you discard. I know there are folks that say if it burns its got to be good. No No No.... just cause it burns does not make it good. Now the hearts of a run will burn too and thats what your after. Learn how to read and make your cuts and that will add volumns of confidence to your stillin. There are threads here that will help so root around the forum and look for a thread called ---foreshots/heads/hearts and tails this thread may help clarify some of what I'm trying to get across. Happy stillin."
