Im a nebie to this hobby and i was wondering if i could use the same carbon that i use in my fish tank ,new of corse,to filter my shine? also do you have to buy special yest or can you use the kind that you get in a shopping market?

If you read around on a lot of the home distilling websites they will say, 'No, you cannot use aquarium activated carbon to filter alcohol.' However these are also the same people who sell 'premium' ,expensive, activated carbon. I have a friend who, for a party, lined the bottom of a fish tank with activated carbon then filled it with ultra-cheap vodka and then let it circulate with an aquarium pump. According to him, this worked very well. I've just dumped aquarium activated carbon in the bottom of bottles of vodk= a and this seemed to work pretty well, but then my tests were a bit less than scientific. The reason given for the premium stuff working better is that the pores are a better fit for the types of chemicals in your liquor, which is a plausible explanation, but I'm still skeptical. I'm sure someone's don= e tests on this, but I'd like to see some info from someone who doesn't have = a monetary interest in the results.
