So I got my hands on a 1/2 keg (15 gallon). Gonna turn it into a pot still with no reflux column. 2" column. How tall does the column need to be? I've seen the reflux columns up to 3 feet tall, and I understand why this is, but how much is enough just for straight stripping?

Hmmm not sure there is any specified minimum length. Seems like some with small stove top gizmos have some which are a matter of a few inches. Just went out and roughly measured my pot still column segment and it appears to about 2'. Which now that is 3" SS but same sized boiler. I would vote for two feet..lol. I would not dare own the wrong sized column of course.

"I have made several of these and really its how you pack it moreso than the heigth (from what I've found). If you went say 3ft. tall and packed it with 4 or 5 mesh rolls that would no dought work in your favor. The mesh would cause sulphide removal and some reflux too. The ones I made were between 2 and 3.5 ft tall and I could'nt really pick em apart in the end product. I think if you get taller its get more unstable (again from what I've found). My tall one I soldiered a loop of copper onto the tower to tie it upright and use that as a stablizer wire.
Now of course if its 5 feet tall it will have alot of reflux happening and that could be a good thing if thats what your after. So I dont think any are wrong just different. If you make it 2 ft tall it will work and if you make it 5 ft tall it will work. Dont fret over it just have fun with it."

I have recently removed the insulation from this tower and the wire. I used this tower on a keg that I cut the top out of and it was kinda shakey and with this setup its pretty darn stable without it. This is my 30 inch tower (it used to be 3ft plus tall) and it'll clean up a potstill run as good as any. Sometimes I rerun it with this tower and its as clean as a reflux run to me. Good luck with your build."
