rick, what grain would you recommend for making a very pure vodka and do you have a recipe...thanks, scott

Without a question, I would suggest wheat malt and flaked wheat ,you need the wheat malt for the enzymes required to convert the starch in the flaked wheat,. Some use Rye, others corn. But most ,all, from our research, but I will err on the side of caution, of the 'ultra-premium' vodka's are made with winter wheat. Toss in the Professional Vodka Yeast ,NOT to be confused with other so-named vodka yeasts,. Our Professional Vodka Yeast is formulated specifically for vodka production from grain, to give the cleanest possible fermentation. It is not a turbo, though, so don't expect it to act like one.

Wow! I read this link and have to say the author is really going around his elbow to get to his thumb. This is a simple all grain infusion mash. If you are a homebrewer or have a friend who is a homebrewer their is equipment to make this whole process much much easier. But since you are not planning to make a beer, where the flavor comes from different grains and you have to add hops for balance and spice, I have a question.

Why couldn't one simply use either un-hopped liquid wheat malt extract or DME and acomplish the same thing without all the equipment or hassle? That way you just add water, bring it to a boil, cool it down ,ice bath the pot in the sink,, pour into the fermentor and toss in the yeast. Zambo! The whole thing is done in a matter of an hour or less. A 3.5 LB can of John Bull Wheat only costs about $10 and will make a 25 Ltr wash.

I honestly cannot say how the wheat malt extract would turn out, when used to produce vodka. You are correct in that the recipe is simply an all-grain wheat mash, but can easily be adapted to any variation with corn, rye, etc. As for what type of wheat is used in an un-hopped JB, I can't say. Would it turn out a good vodka? Only one way to find out. But if you try it, definitely post your results to let us all know. UserPostedImage

No not really. I've brewed beer for many years and have made many extract and hundreds of all grain brews. I'm relativly new to distilling and am working my way through lots of different ideas. Actually I'm thinking about taking Rick up on his challange. I might try making this recipe both ways, all-grain and extract and see what difference it makes. Nothing ventured nothing gained. I have the stainless steel still that breaks apart in the middle. Should I distill these as a pot still or reflux?

I have a good friend ,c...freebrew, who is trying lots of different grain ideas. Maybe we can get him to pipe in on this issue. What say you c...freebrew?

elricko, 1st do a stripping run in a pot still set up, and then reflux....yeah, i could really use a good grain recipe...i have been making spirits with sugar, but i am not really getting the neutral taste and smell i am looking for....thats why i want to try grain....there have been some great shows on the 'history channel' lately on moonshining and distilling...try to catch one of those shows if you can....anyway, remember me for the recipe if you get one....the link rick sent me is good, but very confusing....theres got to be an easier way...thanks, scott from tx....ps...rick, i will be purchasing the grain and stuff i need from you....your the man !!!!

I will be tring rye flake and barley, turbo yeast with all grain very soon. I plan to make the wort like we do with all grain beer. I just hope the rye is not total mess. Was making 30 gallons but may do just 10 -15 since this is first with rye. Any suggestions
