I'm planning on running my pot still. The problem is I don't know how much to run off as fore shots. My pot still is about 15 gal. Any help is appreciated.

most folks run about 150 ml maybe 200 on 15 gallons. I'm just guessing. I use 150 ml on my 8 gallon batches. :)

My potstill guru say to throw a pint. My only pot run was a smaller about 5-6 gallon wash and I threw a cup which seemed to be plenty. Might throw a cup and half and catch about at least the next half pint in or so in real small increments in sequentially placed jars. Give each one a vigorous sniff test the next morning. Would start chunking till it quit smelling like fingernail polisher remover or paint thinner and then put it in the keeper jar. On a reflux run which I have done a lot more there does not seem to be any more front end stinky stuff when going from a small to a big wash. Not sure if it differs for pots and may be different depending on what is in the wash. My theory is after dumping what you think is right..your nose be your best friend. Kindly keeps us posted on how it goes.

Thanks for the tip, 200ml would be close to 8 oz. A pint would be on the safe side for sure. I'll go with that. Thanks for the help

Hold on cornsqueezins....the first 150-200mls is foreshots that is correct. But MOST probably you are gonna have a pint or so of heads to throw away also.

Remember...catch the foreshots - toss out. Then the next 1/2-1 pint is gonna be the heads to toss out too.

Hope this clears up the mud for ya, happy hoochin. The heads are -- acetone--ethyl acetate--methanols. ewwww dont want to drink that stuff. Hope this clears up the mud for ya. Keep the first 2 half pints of stuff set aside and use your nose in the mornin to find all these other yuckies.

I save the next 850 ml to re run. I think he will probably get lots more heads even afte that untill he reaches the hearts which should emerge as head temp hits about 190 deg F ---After hearts comes the tails again to re run. They will be most evident as head temp climbes above 190 deg F.
