Ok, so I'm trying to make a reflux still using a stainless steel pot as a boiler. The lid is mushroom shaped. There is a cylindrical part,the stem, which fits inside of the pot. I'm having a difficult time getting it to seal. Right now I'm using black vinyl,electrical, tape surrounded by layers of teflon tape,which is bonded using rubber cement, in order to keep the plasticizers from leaking from the eletrical tape. It seals okay at low pressures, but it worries me. Does anyone have any suggestions for a durable, heat resistant, alcohol resistant seal I could put on this thing? Preferrably the intersection of cheap, available and good.

Lamp, I have read that the 'blue' automotive and aquarium gasket/sealants are good for this purpose, I am presently constructing a 20-liter 'pot still' from a ss stockpot and plan to use this to make a gasket to seal the top. The trick is to make a VERY THIN bead, spread evenly around the edge of the lid. I tried this on a smaller pot but I figured that a nice thick gasket was what I really needed! Hah! Was I ever wrong! I screwed up th whole lid and the 'blue goop' never did cure! I have tried it again and this time it cured into a very nice ,and apparently durable, gasket. Now, if I can just solve my heating problems ,hot plate vs. hot water heating element,, I'll finish my new rig and 'start a cookin'! So if you have any suggestions along that line, I'd like to hear from you. At any rate, I'll let you know how this works out for me, but I'm betting it will be a success!

I'm about to make a 10 gal. reflux still using 2 ss stockpots welded together. the trick is to drill a hole in the top of one first to let hot gas escape or you will never ever get it to seal. then I plan to open the hole to 2' , weld a fitting on and thread my copper tube to fit on top. this way I can break it down and fill it easier. I'm a good enough welder and my brother is a plumber so I think I may have some good luck.
