What purpose does a thumper keg serve. I have a pot still I want to run a batch in but no thumper. Do I need one? Thank you.

If that's a picture of your still then the cone above the tank and before the lyne arm acts similar to a reflux so no thumper needed.

Thats a neat old school still. A thumper acts as a second boiler to bring up your abv. Thats why they are often referred to as a doubler. They don't actually double your proof, more like they double distill in one run.

Hi, they are heated with the vapor coming from the boiler. There is a tube coming off the boiler and run down to a little above the bottom of the thumper, you need to charge the thumper with some alcohol so it's above the down comming tube, about a 30 to 40% mix. Once the vapor has heated up the liquid in the thumper it starts creating vapor that will go out the tube the top tube and into your condenser for collection.
It's not really necessary to heat the thumper. But a little insulation would'nt hurt. Tho some folks do heat their thumper. On my new conversion I don't plan to heat it but I do have an alcohol burner if I want to hurry it along.
