"I have a 5 gal. pot and can only distill about 21/2 gals. at a time and I'm wondering how much ice I might need to do all 5 gals.
I live in Arizona and at this time of year our tap water is about 65 degrees and I'm sure that's way too warm for the condenser. I'm guessing the water that circulates through the condenser, (not a worm), picks up a lot of heat and I wonder if a 20 pound bag of ice thrown into the 40 quart ice chest, (filled with water), would be sufficient.
I know, there is no table of facts for such an equation but your input is important."

65 DEGREES IS GROUNd water temperature if i am not mistaken.. Ive run my rig for 10 hours on ground water at 65 deg. tap water not recirculating it.

Hi Short Shot, you could run up to 3 1/2 gallons in a 5 gallon pot if you want to. The more you run the longer it takes.
As for the ice needed to run your pot still condenser from a 10 gallon chest I'm thinking a 20lb bag may be enough but I'd want a couple more on hand until you run it and know for sure. Oh, and 65 degrees is plenty cool enough. Don't add your ice right away, wait until the water warms up to about 80 degrees. That way you won't use as much ice.
Another way is to keep a bucket and water hose handy and when your water gets into the 100 to 110 degree range use your return hose to put water in the bucket. Then use the garden hose to put cold water back in the cooler.

You can let the water temp reach as high as 100F and it still be effective at condensing the vapor in the column??

I still run a worm in a 10 gallon bucket. Being winter here, I just set it outside over night and it freezes solid! Good for about 6-8 hour run as it's just above freezing in the garage. Come summer, I'm gonna just put it in the freezer the night before running. No more ice and ice packs for me!
