"Ran my first batch Friday. It was a plain sugar wash and it was some kind of bad. If you could find a battle harden one eyed alley cat pop him in your mouth and swallow and feel him clawing all the way to your stomach trying to get out you'll get an idea of how bad it was. I'm pretty sure I ran it too fast so I treated a stripping run and ran again yesterday. Ran as much reflux as I could just couldn't get proof above 180 took 4 hours to get a quart. Temp was 77-78 C. Used copper mesh from Brewhaus for packing about 1/4 roll. Taste still not much better. Any ideas where I have messed up?

General guideline is what goes in is what comes out.. What was the recipe you used for your wash maybe that can helP someone locate some off flavors. Also how long did it ferment and what were the temps in the room it sat?

"another ?....did you make cuts or seperate your collection or did you collect everything in one or two jugs?

did you dilute your final product with water to a drinkable % ( 190 proof right off the spout is not really good)"

Hi Yurmo,
What kind of rig do you have? If it is one of the Brewhaus systems then I think you are supposed to use all the copper packing they send with your system. 1/4 of one roll is not really that much. On the refluxers the packing really helps alot.

"Maybe I missed something. The question of yeast was never broached. It has been my experience that the type of yeast being used can often have a significant negative impact on taste. It would seem that some yeast, especially species used for fuel production, will produce a large quantity of ETOH within a short period BUT will also produce a very bad taste. I am aware that if a reflux still is properly operated then it should produce a neutral spirit. So I would go so far as to say that the culprit(s) may possibly reside in the type of yeast being used coupled with improper operation of a reflux still.
