So I finally got to see all of season 1 of Moonshiners. Just wondering why they use a big cap on top of the still instead of a column. Is this to catch more flavor, catch more volume? Just curiosity getting the better of me.

I believe it acts as a slobber box. It is not the most common design.

Its about seperation or fractioning when running with a thumper. The piping to thump keg has to be proportionally small compared to the size of a column for said same still to allow vapour velocity to be fast enough to transfer enough heat to run the thumper. A big cap allows for some slow vapour speed before the transfer pipe so you get less smearing.

Oh I see, so the big cap is to build pressure into the pipe to the thumper. Gotta do more research. Do you run a thumper? if so, how much more heat up time is there?
