"I can't make mash in house because wife and odder don't mix. Thought I might pickup and old frig and make a fermentation chamber to go on my car port. Just wondering if anyone had tried this and how it worked out for them.

Thanks,
yurmo"

"Yurmo, find that little search box at the top of the page - type in ( fermenter/chiller) then click on the mag glass beside it and then when it brings you to the threads scroll down to --Redneck Fermenter. You may find something there. Not a fridge but those are cheaper for sure.
Hope this info helps ya....."

"It holds 1 or 2 five gallon fermenters with ice in the middle --- or 1 fermenter and a cooling ice jug.

The fan runs off the 12 volt transformer and the thermostat you see runs of 2 AA batteries. You just set the temp you want and the thermostat is the break in the electricity. Just like in your house the temp controls the thermostat and the therm. controls the fan. The fan circulates the cool air around the cooler and its like a fridge in there. Of course you have to change the ice but its easy to figger that out.

So I wanted to know what size is your cooler was looking at a 150 qt. thinking about adding water, fish thermo and a small pump to stabilize the temp of my ferments then in the summer going to a set up like you have and if there any other cold weather mashers any input would great thanks

"Welcome fruitbat,
the cooler I used is a 165qt. Supermax cool Igloo. The reason I used one that big is cause none of the others I tested would hold a 5 gallon bucket with a airlock on top. If you look back you'll see the lid is cupped up of you will. Wtih the fermenter and the airlock its takes one pretty tall inside. I think it would be cheaper to buy a cheaper cooler and get different fermenters ---but of course NOW I know that. ($275.00 for that cooler)
We camp and travel alot so we need lots of coolers and my thinking was once I'm done with this type thing I still have a great cooler. My suggestion would be to decide what type fermenter you want to use and then pick a cooler for this application. I even found 5 gallon squatty buckets after the ferm/chiller was done.
Again...decide on the fermenters you want then get a cooler.
Now as to the outside temp thing......man I'm from Fl and the cool air thing is just not a problem for me. I know you can get a brew belt and they do work but if its 20F in your garage I'm not sure that would do much good. I have used a heating pad before and that worked but ya know inside the house might be the answer for you this time of year. Anyway good luck and hope ya get it foggered out."
