Hi Gibbs, usually if the yeast has stoped working it's because--1) there's no more sugar for it to consume, or, --2) it has converted enough sugar to alcohol that it has reached it's saturation point. Either way aireation is unlikely to to start it up again unless something other than the above two reasons has stalled it. Check your hydrometer reading and see if you are at 1.0 or below, if so it's done.

"Hi Gibbs,

Once your wash has finished I don't think you'll gain much by disturbing the yeast bed. You might see some bubbles, but that's just from the suspended CO2 in your wash. Fermentation is anaerobic (without oxygen), so adding oxygen to the wash when the wash is finished (or nearly finished) doesn't help the yeast. Aerating prior to pitching your yeast is where you gain an advantage ... during attenuation (see http://www.howtobrew.com...ction1/chapter6-9-2.html).which is an aerobic activity.

Shaking things up at the end of fermentation won't hurt anything ... but it will cloud up your wash ... so you'll just have to wait longer for it to clear.

The best thing to do is to sanitize your hydrometer and drop it in. If you've reached your target final gravity (FG) you can rack it and let it clear. Once it clears, run it.

Regards,

Thanks guys. Just kinda curious. I should have realized that "aerating" would do nothing beneficial, but i guess one of the things I was wondering about was mixing to where the lil yeast guys could find some more sugar to convert.

I just picked up a hydrometer and a few other toys today.

In that case I guess I'll be ready for a first run in a cpl of days!

any who

with the rum batch that is almost ready all i did was once i introduced the yeast to the wash i shook the container (they are two, one gal batches).

the corn/sugar mash i have going i let cool to fermenting temp. then to pitch the yeast i scooped out 2 cups, introduced yeast and stirred, then placed a towel over it for two hrs. Stirred the hell out of the wash then mixed in the yeast/mash goo back into the bucket-O-mash. took a cpl of hrs but its been bubbling like crazy for the past two days now.

the rum is still bubbling a little and i have yet to finish my propane burner. With that and thanksgiving it prolly wont be until fri-sat until i can test out my still... im too impatient. i guess this will give it a chance to settle out completely

thanks again, and will do JB

There should be a little box below the LOG IN box that says stay logged in or something to that effect. If you check that box when you log in you won't get logged out every couple minutes.
