"I still have my first sugar wash fermenting but after seeing some of the photos posted here I decided I should be able to build my own "˜parrot". There is a short piece of tubing on the bottom merely to hold the parrot stable in the walnut stand. I have less than $25.00 in materials and I"m sure that price is a little high compared to purchasing copper in a bigger city as opposed to the little hardware store that I frequent. I'm kinda proud of it since it is the first time I have tried to solder copper pipe/tubing." Hi Shortshot, With the exception of the stain on the wood base it looks almost exactly like the parrot I bought on Ebay. Very nice job and almost half the cost. Short Shot,
I've started one like that my self, I'm still looking for a base. Yours looks real nice but have you tried to put a container under it yet, it looks like the base sticks out as far as the drip tube. maybe turn it 90* to the base... But again nice job...

The parrot can be turned 360° so there's no problem with that.
I've had the walnut stock for many years and figured it would make a good base. I bought it from a hardwood outlet and if you're anywhere near one you'll find they have a great selection of exotic woods."

Short shot,
Hey that's a good idea you reminded me of a place not to far from me that makes gun stocks and they sell small pieces to people for firewood or kindling cheap... What did you use for the catch cup, is that just a cap upside down with a hole to drain?

Yep, that's just a cap with a hole drilled in it. It's a lot cheaper than the price of a reducer.

I am not sure what Short Shot used but I am making one and that is what I am using. I think using 3/4" is a little tight... Hope this helps...

Captinjack Mine is 3/4 and it works great. The alchometer is tight but it works. Maddawgs

"I used 3/8"" tubing and 1"" pipe, plus the reducer is 1""x1¾"". It was surprisingly easy, I made the 3/8"" tubing about 50% longer than the 1"" pipe. I filled the 3/8"" tubing with table salt, taped both ends and shaped it over a 4"" circumference.
After soldering I buffed it up and coated it with two layers of lacquer spray."

"I banged this one out of scraps...the inside tube is 3/4 and works fine....I left the 'coiled' look for a blast to the past....the hyperbola is soldered at the dip tube to keep the flow downward...  no finish; the patina will come from the alcohol staining...."

Now THATS cool lookin.. as Will Smith said....I gotta get me one a these.....was it tough to coil copper like that? I tried and failed miserabley. By god I'm gonna try again thanks for the idea.

Thanks guys for the great info on building one of these. I'm going to "attempt" to build one. I have failed miserably also at bending copper in the past so we'll see how it goes.

Here's my first attempt at building one, I just wanted to keep it simple for my first one. I'll make another after I get mt still and make one that hangs from the still. I used 1" tube and 1"x2" reducer and a 2" catch cup...  I'm still working on a better base...

Nice job captin. Yeah the base is a little on the small side but the black walnut looks really good with the polished copper.
