"well im fairly new to this but wanted to try a sweet feed whisky. i did a lot of reading and ran to tractor supply to get the feed, only to find out i should have bought all grain feed not sweet feed (so why do we call it sweet feed whiskey). i decided to ferment it anyway hopefully ill get to distill it next week. heres my recipe:
4in of sweet feed in 6 gallon bucket 5 lbs sugar 3 packets of flieschmans yeast
initial s.g. was 1.084
going to distill it 2x in a pot still, my question is what kind of results can i expect with the pelleted sweet feed?"

what makes you think you purchased the wrong stuff?? sweet feed has a molasses coating which is necessary in the sweet feed wash.

The pelletized stuff will work; it'll just be a bear racking it off....

No worries dude, when you start to syphon it off just keep an eye on it down in the bucket and stop when it gets close, we all have this issue weather its with sweetfeed or fruit or almost any other ferments. We still wanna leave all that goopy stuff behind. Just be carefull and dont fret over it.

Oh and just for future reference, sweetfeed can be pelleted or left in the whole grain style,(pelleted is for older horses that dont have good teeth, and or bad digestion thats all) either will work ---- just as Mr. Scotty pointed out, its the molassess that we are after and you'll prolly get some grainy flavor too. IMHO...

thanks everyone for the fast replies. i will let you know how it turns out. i have a small 2.5 gallon copper still so i plan on doing 2 stripping runs then 1 spirits run.

Ha I did the same thing! I'm actually distilling a batch of right now.. It was a pain in the rear getting all the liquid out of my sweet feed..it soaked up a good couple of gallons. It's coming out at a high proof just fine and taste okay. Imnot really sure what a good sweet feed whiskey taste like though.

No sir. Its too risky and too expensive to buy a still from a site IMO. By the way my whisky turned light yellowish brown..a similar color to my wash. I don't think that suppose to happen it came out pure white and clear..

Apologies that I have no insight on your color situation, Im a newbie as well. When you talk about doing 2 stripping runs and 1 spirits run, can you go into that in some more detail? I have a general idea of what you mean.....I have a 7 gallon reflux still that can also be ran as a pot by using only the leibig condenser, and Im interested in getting into the manufacture of something more crafty than straight ethanol."

Ive always been under the impression that a reflux was the only way to get a white clear distillate, that running as a pot still would always produce tastes/colors of some type....?

even running in pot mode it comes out clear. Reflux will take taste out and produce a neutral

And pot is the only way for taste to be produced?

Why would my whiskey turn slightly yellow like my wash? I did have a tiny bit of solids in my pot..but I figured coffee filters would take care of it.

Taste will transfer with a pot still, but rarely if ever with a reflux style still.
