"Do any of you know if these yellow 20 gal Haz Mat shipping containers are food grade? I have two of them that have never been used and was thinking about drilling the lids for airlocks and using them for ferminters. I was once told that any plastic container that wasn't black was food grade, and these are like a short plastic barrels."

Dunno. I did a quick search and didn't come up with anything regarding the plastic composition. Is there a code on the barrel that indicates the type of plastic? Maybe a triangle with a number inside it?
However, the Rubbermaid Brute 20 gallon trash can at Home Depot is food grade (it is NSF 2 and the part number starts with "FG" - meaning food grade, they are made from LLDPE - Linear Low-Density Polyethelene, which has excellent resistance to alcohol).
They are good to ferment in, but you have to find a solution for a top to seal it. The lid that comes with it does not seal air-tight.
NSF/ANSI Standard 2: Food Service Equipment Equipment commonly known as 'fabricated food equipment': kitchen, bakery, pantry and cafeteria units, and other food handling and processing equipment including tables and components, counters, shelves, sinks, hoods, etc.

"Ya know I have heard folks say you can ONLY use this and that but what I have found and seen is almost any container that doesn't leak will do. Just sterilize it good, notice I said sterilize not sanitize. I am now using and have for 2 years a bucket that had hand soap in it and another that was supposed to be a mop bucket. I'm not saying that you should'nt get others but since we're not cooking in them I have never had any bad smells or anything carryover. I saw at Firehouse Subs they have some 5 gallon buckets that are for some charity and since I'm a firefighter I figgered those would be cool fermneters. Soon as I make it back to town Ima get me 2 of em. I will sterilize them and put em to good use.
Again, I'm not saying you should'nt use food grade buckets or whatever floats your boat but if its clean and steril try it and see. We are gonna boil and sterilize when we cook anyway."
